Default How do search engines decide what should be at the top???

How do search engines decide what should be at the top of a page??

What criteria do they use?

Do they search for the number of times that a URL is displayed across the web or something?

Any info appreciated.

There are MANY factors that determine it.

The simplest one of course is BUY a keyword so that yahoo guarentee you will place when its entered.

They look at how often links from their search engine to that site are clicked, they look at the content of the page, the URL itself has a big impact on it, and they look potentially at meta tags too, although this is getting less common now.

You will NOT find a publshed definitive "how to get to the top ofour search engine" guide from any search engine company though!

Lets see a link to the site you wish to improve the odds of?

Getting "reverse links" helps a lot though, so putting it in your signature on a load of forums that are well indexed would be good, migweb is great for this

Fuck me yes.

Thats terrible, LOL

for a start you do NOT want frames, there is almost no text on there and also it looks shit (thats a seperate issue though)

That really is terrible, do you want me to do you a site sometime?
What technology can you use on the backend of it?
Ie can you use PHP etc?

It SHOWS that it was setup in an hour, and it shows that it was by someone who hasnt got a clue

It is to good website optimisation what a saxo on 24" chrome spinners with a 1.1 engine is to making a hillclimb car

right, REAL basic stuff here, the FIRST page on your website the search engines get to is going to largely determine a lot about your ranking, this is what it finds on your website:

Code:
<html>

<head>
<title>Suffolk Flocking Services</title>
</head>

<frameset cols="156,*" framespacing="0" border="0" frameborder="0">
  <frame name="left" scrolling="no" noresize target="rtop" src="buttons.htm">
  <frameset rows="17%,*">
    <frame name="rtop" target="rbottom" src="header.htm" scrolling="no" noresize>
    <frame name="rbottom" src="home.htm">
  </frameset>

  <noframes>
  <body topmargin="0" leftmargin="0">

This page uses frames, but your browser doesn't support them.</p>

  </body>
  </noframes>
</frameset>

</html>

Hardly says a lot about you or your services really does it mate?

That really is terrible, do you want me to do you a site sometime?
What technology can you use on the backend of it?
Ie can you use PHP etc? (with our current web hosting i mean)

IF (and it is a pretty big IF, lol) your site is currently indexed at all, i bet all the indexes go to the frame content pages and dont actually take anyone to the site itslef properly.

Look at what you get if you put in this:

flocking services dash suffolk
on www.yahoo.co.uk

Only TWO references to you:

Suffolk Flocking Services Open this result in new window
... Some pictures of work completed by Suffolk Flocking Services to give you an idea of the range of ... Subaru Impreza rally car. Including dash, centre switch panel and trans tunnel ...
www.suffolkflockingservices.co.uk/gallery.htm - 7k - Cached - More pages from this site - Save

PassionFord.com :: View topic - dash flocking Open this result in new window

http://www.passionford.com/forum/vie....php?p=2243150 - 193k - Cached - More pages from this site - Save

One of which is actually a link to this forum instead of your site!

If you follow the one and only link to your site (and i only found that by being SO specific on key words!) you get this page
www.suffolkflockingservices.co.uk/gallery.htm

From which the user cant even manage to get to your contact details.

Fucking great for business that is

I actually feel like i was unfair on that saxo, at least it would EVENTUALLY get up the hill

What sort of prices do you charge to create a decent website.
I am a member of an RC car club and we have been discussing updating or site to try and attract members.

I'm currently the only person who ever does anything on the site, but I only have admin access, and since its written in cold fusion, and no1 knows much about it, it doesn't get updated.

We would be looking for a website with some decent info, pics, contact information, a gallery where we can add pics, news on the main page and possibly a forum.

The site at the moment is www.arccc.org

doug makes websites like he makes love.

Infrequently
Far too quickly
With not enough attention to detail
And without the correct tool for the job

If you are willing to make the cost outlay then look at Google AdWords as a route to fast targeted hits.

You'll find the route to the first page fold via traditional organic SEO a slow, although free, process.

I think the most rewarding place to start is via quality external links as Chip has mentioned. Get listed on the big directories such as local businesses and motorsport suppliers.

Thats AFTER you have restructured your site though of course!

No good when the links end up showing just a content frame with no navigation.

Mate of mine takes part in SEO competitions, usually does quite well to! He's tried explaining it to me before but it's like another language, what does help him though is having loads of sites all linked to each other (talking over 100)

SEO is a real science, and i dont profess to be an expert on the finer details, but getting the BASICS right, like every page that a search engine lists actually gives you a decent chance of the customer getting your contact details if they want them and stuff like that makes a massive difference anyway without going down to the Nth degree in terms of optimisation.

Meaningful page titles and decent file names are another very simple way for example.

I was doing EXACTLY what i would do if it was a post on engines etc TBH
Putting my point across bluntly and as accurately as i can.

I feel that I gave good useful advice that actually took me a reasonable amount of my time to type out and to come up with and that he can be greatful for, (looking into his site and how it currently places in yahoo etc), and if anyone doesnt like how its worded they dont have to read it (including doug)

Like Stu says though, we're good mates, so ive probably laid it on a little thicker than i would for anyone else, so its about 50/50 on the cunt scale

Yeah you have to be careful not to try TOO hard or they spot you are taking the piss, LOL

Often when they ban page submissions though its over a copyright infringement.

For example, one site i currently work on is www.toyota.co.uk

If we put keywords on the site of "vauxhall / fiat / ford " etc to pick up hits from people searching for those too, it would be likely to result in yahoo pulling our links
