It's been written off being beyond economical repair.

Cat D is the least of the 4 levels, generally pretty light damage. no inspection needed following repair.

or maybe stolen recovered, parts stolen from vehicle that are expensive/difficult to replace.you find that insurance companies prefer to write off "difficult" cars rather than repair them.

i used to work for a large insurance companies bodyshop and the number of cars that were "written off"as cat d rather than repair them for reasons such as
1-these cars are really hard to get parts for
2-dealer doesnt do a bumper/bonnet etc any more and you cant get an aftermarket one
3-the guy who owns this car is really fussy and will not be happy with the repair
4-the guy loved this car and doesnt want it back now its been damaged.
5-weve got a yard full of cars to repair so we'll just write this one off
6-so and so from here wants to buy the salvage so we'll write it off.

on the flip side ive seen some heavily damaged cars repaired that you wouldnt think could go back on the road due to the state of them, and they are not even listed as damaged/repaired.

my rs500 was a cat d in 2001-think it was stolen recovered and damaged.most rs500's now would be written off if they were bumped due to the scarcity of parts to repair.
if the car looks right, and its priced accordingley(cheaper than normal),then buy it.
