Good luck mate. I have been doing it since I was 17, am 19 now and going to Uni this year to do the BSc. Decided against doing the day release thing though as I wanted to live the 'Uni lifestyle'..well just drop my standards and shag anything, just have an excuse for it .

Will miss the money though

3 years time though, will be earning proper cash

I'm 19 this November, so i'll have finished the degree course by the time i'm 24.

The thing that put me off doing the 5 year thing, is that its not exactly the most stress free job in the world, and I find myself working extra hours ALOT. You are expected to get in a certain amount of hours study after work, aswell as attend Uni once a week...That must leave you with almost no social life .

What uni you going to?

Fortunately due to the company i'm working for having agreed to pay for my Uni fee's, they also understand that i may need additional days off in order to get my studies done.

Although you're probably right, i can imagine my social life being a bit tight for a while... got to be done though!

I'll be studying at Salford University.

Yeah thats not bad at all...

I'm getting paid what i consider to be a reasonable wage considering the amount of fee's they're paying out for me to study...

And after the 5 year term, when i walk out of uni with a degree, and 5 years experience.. i am free to take that qualification and experience and work wherever i feel like.

I've had a nice easy day today, hence spending a fair amount of time on here

You have got a good deal too by the sound of it

Walking out of a Ł24k a year job at 19 to live in what you know is going to be a shithole is quite hard though. Kind of envious that you are doing the 5 year thing, I just think it would be too much for me and i would lose interest, living and breathing QS'ing

Yeah... Ł24k a year at 19.. you weren't doing badly were you!

I'm starting on Ł12k now.. but inevitably that'll be reviewed over time and increase... Put it this way.. it better had!

But i can take days off to study, aswell as my day at uni.

I've got this laptop i'm using now also

I just know that i'll walk out of here after 5 years, with the experience and qualifications to walk straight into a well paid, respected job.

Certainly mate, experience is what counts as much as the degree, which is why im glad i got a couple of years before going to Uni.

As soon as you know what your doing (Not saying you dont know anything now) the pay will go up rapidly!!

Yeah, you'd be right by saying i don't know anything now anyway

I've done about 3 months with the company, prior to trying Land Surveying for 6 months... but the 3 months i did, i mostly focussed on site management and other areas, so its all new to me QS.

They offered me what i have now, i've not had to ask for it, i didn't apply to work for them, i was invited.

I should be able to pick things up pretty quickly, i have support from a couple of other QS's and other members of the team.

Land Surveying was fantastic during the summer, just a right ball ache during the winter

Yeah, likewise, its good to know i'm not the only 19yr old QS-in-training!

Like you say, people ask what the hell it is i actually do... and its really hard to explain exactly what it is you do... managing finances and such is usually a good start to explaining!
