It depends what they need doing mate, i dont have a very clearly defined role as i dont actually work for them direct, i just consult to them.

I dont work with the cars themselves though normally if thats what you mean, well other than ive done some testdriving for them at millbrook and silverstone and stuff like that, but nothing involving programming for the production cars, which is a shame as i think i would find that interesting but thats all done in japan for toyota and i wouldnt want to move there to do it.

For example one thing im doing currently is specifying a new finance system used for quoting for finance on Lexus cars, and last month i was actually doing programming for developing an online system that allows people to configure their cars on the toyota website.


Programming is my background, ending up working for a car manufacturer is just a co-inceidence really for me that its also a bit of a hobby of mine, for example one of the jobs i had before here was developing real time control software for power stations, its just luck i ended up doing car related stuff, thats not specifically the only industry i work for.

I am the one who has to deal with the customer and the aftermath left by our sales people

There in lies the dilema Rab did you ever find out what yacht he was on ? i would love to go commercial but would take a large pay cut and be in less luxurious enviroments, but would get the rotation, plus i am tax free at the moment my misses claims to want to see me more (only joking of course she does) but the lifestlye would change dramitically if i did go commercial

It doesn’t really matter what you do, it’s how much do you get paid, and do you like what you do, that I’m really interested in. Running nice Cossies takes a lot of money. Some people are really cagey about how much they earn. I’m not.

I’m 41 and a Manager of an IT SAP MM/WM team. Gross salary Ł80K, plus Ł8K a year car allowance, plus an unlimited Petrol card for the Cossie, which usually runs about Ł5k a year, plus a 10% yearly bonus scheme. It’s really boring, and I’d like to try something more challenging and a bit different.
