Fooking DOORS!!!!!
Who in the hell decided that doors should be hung to open INTO a room?
I don't mean into as in they open in rather than out, I mean into as in they swing into the room part of the room, rather than to a wall....
I mean, why do it like this;
When it would be FAR better like this;
Why would it be better I hear you ask? Well cos you can put anything in front of the door for a certain ammount of room for it to swing past and into the room, so if you had it swing towards the wall, you have more space to come into the room... follow me? Sure, means you can't put anything along the wall where the door would open against, but you can't put anything there anyway as with doors the way they are now you wouldn't be able to open the blasted thing anyway
What a shit design - who can I complain to about it?

Ryan - thats the thing, you DON'T see the room when you open the door - you see a fooking door and a wall
My way (second pic) would allow you to view the ENTIRE room upon opening a door....
Ginge - I would rehang my doors, but as you said - lighswitch relocation would be interesting And I have old fashioned doors here with proper frames and catches etc, so it would be MAJOR fucking around to do it - so I can't be arsed
But it annoy's me - my room isn't massice, and I have a wardrobe next to the door (door opens against it) and when coming in form the outside you have a chest of drawers right in front of you - since the door only opens 90'deg (wardrobe) and chest of drawers right infront, if you have anything of decent size to bring into room, you're fucked

I've got 7 doors to rehang like that
Use a laminate trimmer to cut out the hinge, then a trend corner chisel (8.99 from B&Q) to punch the corners, bout 10 minutes a door (longer if you dont have practice )

If you notice, it will be the usual thing on older propertys for the BEDROOM and BATHROOM doors open just like in the first drawing.
This is because it gives the occupent(s) in the room a chance to "cover up" when sombody else is about to enter the room. Also the door can be left slightly open (even half open) and if someone passes the room they cant see whoever is in the room getting changed/undressing.
Living rooms and kithens are always as per the second drawing, as they dont have the same "problems" with regard to privacy.
I dont know if the above applies to modern propertys though.

Like Doug said it all to do with Privacy - The door swing is totally to do with the Usage of the room.
On a new house you'd get the opportunity to have the swing as you want it.
Sadly i deal with this everyday Lol Thats why i'm on here to keep myself going hehe

Theres hanging a door, and then theres hanging a door properly
Lost count of how many doors Ive seen DIY`ers who are "handy" chopping the fuck out of frames, also what if when on the new side your door is now "hinge-bound", do you know how to put it right, pay a joiner man in fact I charge Ł13 an hour where are you?

I had this with our new flat, not only does the door open the wrong way, but they also put the light switch BEHIND the door!
argues with Crest for a few days telling them it was wrong and in the end amde the guy find the light switch in the dark! it was changed shortly after

most houses built from about the turn of the century (the last one) till about the mid 60's have doors like that which swing into the room
it's all about privacy as said before, but when our house was rewired and i mentioned it to the old man about getting the doors rehung and the switches switched overhe was like "wtf? this way i can hide behind the door if i want to" and i was like

do a lambo door conversion and hinge them from the top. then youll have a chance to cover up your privacy as the door is being opened and still be able to view the whole room

got sliding doors in the new house we bouaght last year
great for space saving, but you can't lock them
and even if you could lock them, you just lift them off and in you go
the only way to make them secure would be to have them like in the starship enterprise and little wooshing sounds
