am i right in assuming that all it means is that both the inlet and outlet pipes come out of the same side of the cooler??

Yep

Twin pass means the air charge passes over the cooler twice (inlet and outlet on the same side of the cooler)

Single pass means it passes over once.

Single is better for a number of reasons.
