Default FAO PF golfers

I'm just starting to play golf and have seriously got the bug. On the hunt for a set of irons (don't mind 2nd hand) which are preferably branded (I'm a mug) and are good for a beginner.

I've been thinking about Ping Zing 2's, what do you use and have you any recommendations?

cheers!

All depends what you like the look off when it sits behind the ball.

Personally I like Calloway Big Bertha's Irons and Taylormade woods.

Try lots out and see what you like best, don't just buy on looks oand price.

Happy spending mate

Deffo calloway big b's or the RAC taylormades are good

Used some Mizuno Comp CT's recently, think they're relatively cheap and to be honest, I really liked them!

Best thing to do is go to a driving range on an evening they're testing clubs and try out loads until you find some you like [and get free swing tips from the pros ]

*EDITED TO ADD*

Just read your original post, you want something cavity backed, don't get sucked into buying blades if you've just started.

Personally never got on with any Ping products other than the clothing I always seem to hit further with other drivers but you gotta love the sound the Ping ones make

Avoid graphite shafts on your irons unless you're a girl, disabled or old.

cheers for the replies,

the fella at club golf recommended I get cavity backs with steel shafts as it'll help me get loft on the ball.

I've been having a few lessons too which has totally changed my swing, so at the moment it still feels quite un-natural

The main problem I have is topping the bloody thing every few shots at the range..... which completely destroys my confidence..... which means I flap and fuck things up even more!

Alot of my mates have been playing for years which makes me really nervous when I'm about to swing.

Ok mate nice to see another golfer on here!

For a beginner i cannot recommend PING EYE 2's enough. I told Matt Bibs the same when he started. You can get a full set of good used irons for around 200 quid....when you upgrade later youll get that back they hold thier value well. As for woods. DO NOT buy a driver. Buy a good 3 wood and tee of with that until you get you swing going. There is nothing worse that hitting bad drives that go out of bounds etc and give you no confidence and get you mad and affect the rest of your game...take a 3 wood get it down the fairway and work from there...

I would remomend the following...

Ping eye 2's 3-SW
A decent 3 wood, any good make oversize head
A fairway wood, around 17degrees. I use orlimar but any good make again...fairways woods are easier to hit than long irons for getting you down that fairway on par 5's etc...

I play off 10 handicap and cant stress enough to get lesson NOW NOW NOW before bad habits kick in.

heres mine btw:

Cobra 360cc Driver 10 deg
Mcgregor offset 3 wood
Orlimar 17deg fairway wood
Ping G2 irons 3-sw
Oddyssey red hot 2 ball putter

And im in the process of finding a mid wedge...cant decide on degree tho

Any more help just ask...

Topping it is probably down to not keeping ya eye on the ball and trying to knock the shit out of the ball. You swing hard, at the same time your head comes up as your trying to look where its gone before youve hit it(common prob) and you top it. Pick a spot out at the back of the ball(about 5mm behind it) and stare at it until you have completed the swing...fook where the ball goes let someone else see that

It is matey when you have to give "bandits" a load of shots

Its difficult getting down to single figures but trying to get down further is

a nightmare

Yes i have had a few under par rounds and a few games in the 80's

Real hard game to master and can quite easily bring you to your

knees in just 1 bad hole

2under is great golf buddy just beeing able to do that means you have

a good idea on the swing etc...

remember: Perfect practice makes perfect!

Also work hard on your shortgame the putter is the key

oh yeah definatley agree. No point driving it 300 yards if ya ya shortgames not up to scratch..... My mates like that, awesome with the driver but no 'touch'

In fact he hits his 3 iron about 15 yards less than me with my driver but i always beat him

Dont get me wrong it is great to see...when he hits a drive it looks awesome....hes straight and long dont get me wrong hes not shit...but his touch lets him down and costs him..

I only drive on ave about 260-280 with run....had the odd 300 plus but on a good day.......

Cheers for your replies boys

I'm paying Ł15 a lesson at the mo (my Dad got me a load for a birthday present), the pro is a good bloke who used to hold a tour card so must know his stuff.

Its just frustrating having the shoite thrashed out of me by my mates who have been playing for the best part of fifteen years

Lee, how long have you been playing for?

I've got my eye on some ping zing 2's but there are loads of slightly different models with different degrees of lie.

I've heard that the degree of lie that you need is based off of your height (amongst other stuff), I'm 6ft tall so what'd be best?

Am i likely to notice the difference in all this stuff if I'm just starting out??

id spend 250 on used quality than 250 on new 'not so good' stuff mate personally

You can have the lie angle altered at good retailers for about a couple of quid per club. Or if you get ping they will alter them for free at their shop in Gainsbrough

just got back in to playing agian. Playing off 4 again at the moment.

With clubs when i was an assistant pro i never pushed a particular brand. Its all about the feeling when you pick up a club and the ball strike.

You automatically know whether you the clubs suit you.

I ve found a set of clubs that i like and have stuck with them.

I use a set of custom forged Mizuno T Zoid Pros their an inch longer than standard and 2 degrees upright. Got them made specially by mizuno and they are fantastic really strong low ball flight.

Seeing as theres some good player on here....ie 4 Handcaps etc a bit of advice i need

My short game is quite good, but i never get no real bite on the greens. Why? I get good flight etc but it always skips on a few feet. Ok this isnt a prob when the pin is at the mid to rear of green but when its at fron i want to be able to attack it....

Spot on advice, just what i was goig to say. Zing 2's good irons aswell though.

I have been using Ping Eye 2 for the last 6 years and still cant justify buying new ones[new mizuno mp30's just pure sex though]. I have been playing off 9 for the last 3yrs, but join the RAF means only really play once every 6 weeks or so unless on leave. Annoying as i know i could be off around 4-6 if played every week.

As anyone will tell you the games a pain in the arse, main thing is try and keep chilled and practice what you learn in lessons. The games not cheap to start up or keep playing which sucks ass. Bought a driver last year and now because so much stronger[some would say fatter] i really could do with a change as hitting it that high its going 260-270ish on the fly but with no run. Really cant justify the money it will cost to change when like has been said the Cossie needs stuff doing to it.

I am using at the mo:[all stiff shafts +1 inch as i big coont]

King cobra 400cc sz 10.5
Old taylor made Burner 5 wood
Ping eye2 3-sw
tad moor 57 and 62
ping cushin 3 putter

but depending what course play change clubs about may add 2 iron or 3 wood.

Lee get the loft on your sw checked as i know my eye2 one is only 53 deg so use it as a gap wedge and bought a 57 and 62.

Take it mostly concerning 9 irons wedges into greens mate.

Trick is clean groves for a start, then ball slightly further back than normal the hit down on the ball[if get me] thats how i play them and dont have any problems stopping a ball.

As for normal irons shots aint got a clue mine just stop lol.

my prob now is that I hit the ball much further specially my long irons 4/ 5 I have an occasional left hook then I can't find the fooker as it's usually wet or in a forest!!!
in the olden days I never hooked just duffed it. The days of duffing 10 yards are all but over but my rounds have got worse!!
was going round in the low 80's now it's in the 90's
also putting I struggle to hit the bin lid with my first one and take 3

I tend to Pull a shot rather than hook Steve. Thing is when i pull it a bit i must make the sweetest of contacts as it goes miles. If i hit the wedge normally around 120, if i pull it i bet i hit 140 easy

Its all down to poor setup

I played up at Morley in Derby a couple of weeks ago.

Going round REALLY well, 3 over for the first 8, until I drove into the water, dropped, and then caught the ditch 20 yards from the front of the green!

Totally knocked my confidence, and shot the back 9 in a dismal score!

God I hate this game!
