It all started in 1963, when we introduced age related plates.
Then they were made up of 3 letters (related to the area of the country the car was registered), 3 numbers and a final letter. EG: ABC 123A
That final letter changed every year.
Some time in the '60s the change was moved from january to august to even out car sales throughout the year.
By 1983, we had run out of letters (not using O Q U and Z) so the plates were reversed.EG: A123 ABC
So a car registered in either 1963 or 1983/84 are known as "A reg" (or 83 on a A if your're a real car trader type)
This ran up until 1999, when the government couldnt wait to introduce their new scheme started to change the plate letter every 6 months, so W,X and Y were used up in 18 months.
The new scheme (which is total bollocks!
) has 2 letters relating to the area, 2 numbers which begin with 0 for the 1st 6 months of the year, and 5 for the 2nd 6 months, followed by 3 random letters. EG AB02 CDE would denote the car is an early 2002 and AB52 CDE is a late 2002
Hope that helps!!

I was wondering why sellers of cars on PF say which x-reg they have, when they also tell you the buildyear..
still don't get it though
