Group A are large filters yes.

you can get universal ones too, from RamAir / ITG etc..

I'd recommend ITG myself..

Panel filter......
as already mentioned quieter, cheaper, cooler air intake. And good for at least 400 bhp.

Have you EVER measured the under-bonnet heat build up whilst on track?

I think you would be surprised and would INSTANTLY retract your comment above .

where does the sirbox take its cold air feed from?

my car is running a cone but still has the airbox feed in front of the filter

surely the intake temps dont matter that much when the air is just fed into a compressor at several hundred degrees anyways?

Yes, forgot to mention that both those pictured have the FRONT ONLY cut out for improved airflow .

The air is fed into the compressor at what-ever temp it is sucked in from the turbo, so if ambient, then it sucks in ambient, if under-bonnet, then it sucks in what-ever temp that air is (40-70°C on track ). It is then compressed, which heats it up further, before being cooled by the intercooler. Obviously the cooler the air is going into the turbo, the cooler it will be when compressed and an easier job the intercooler will have in taking as much heat out of it as possible..... Normally, the air exits the turbo at anything from 120-170°C.

PS. I will have an EXACT answer to your boost gauge question shortly - I'm not ignoring you .

Almost Mike but just as I was about to read the thermometer, I lost my grip & was thrown off onto the track, you must have longer nails.

Just fit a cone filter and be done with it for three good reasons.

1. It's so much more simple and loses all that airbox nonsense.

2. It sounds far better, and wont make any noticeable difference on a road car whatsoever.

3. It'll piss Mike off

For even better airflow I would reccomend a large filter fitted within the bumper. I dont think this is too easy on a Saph/Sierra, but on an Es Cos there is already a hole in the inner wing to make the job easy (hole needs enlarging slightly):

First seen 3 years ago on a Red Es Cos:

Recently seen on another Es Cos at Ford Fair:

Well I never knew about or saw that arrangement before doing it on my car.......

If fact, I was nerveous about the likelyhood of the filter sucking rainwater and locking-up the engine, but when I showed my filter-in-bumper arrangement to Harvey (Gibb), he told me not to worry, because most of the RS500 touring cars had them fitted back in the late 80's.....some of those races were VERY wet

But I still DO worry and only use light throtle/low boost in heavy rain - just in case.......

I treated it with the contempt it so obviously deserved .

I couldn't care less if you want to lose 10-20bhp for no reason, that's down to the owner .

If you had asked when I had to take it off to fix the alternator wiring, I would have taken one. But it's a pain having to remove everything (arch liner etc) just for a photo, that you will have to wait a while .

That's how much they can loose on the rollers, where temps climb similarly to the temps seen on track, so can be directly extrapolated .

Mike,

Can you remind me please............

Who was it the modified his Es Cos air box 4 years ago, so that a T4 inlet hose could go straight in to the enlarged opening, without needing a machined reducer to restrict flow?

How can my machined reducer restrict flow, when my reducer has the same ID as a T4 .

Your effort was just to push the hose in - very "Blue Peter" .
