So, what’s the (love) story here then? You thought you had heard the last of this record or should I say of these records right? Well, no. Layo & Bushwacka’s ‘Love Story’ and Kings Of Tomorrow’s ‘Finally’ were undoubtedly two of the most memorable dance records of recent years. Both records were huge club anthems but surprisingly never quite performed in the charts. Now they’ve come together as one. What are we talking about? Well here’s the story …
‘Love Story’ first made its appearance on white label at the end of 2001. It soon took on a life of its own and was eventually released on XL in June 2002. Over the summer it became apparent that this record is not ready to go away – it’s was THE record that everyone played week in, week out in Ibiza, the demand for the 12” was huge (it sold over 15,000 copies in two months over the summer before it was deleted). It was THE record of the year for such luminaries as Pete Tong, Judge Jules, Roger Sanchez, Dave Seaman and Stanton Warriors.
Last January Matthew Bushwacka! made a bootleg using the Kings of Tomorrow 'Finally' vocal over the top of 'Love Story'. He’s been ripping up the dancefloors with it ever since. The demand for this bootleg has been so high that XL Recordings have managed to get the sample cleared and are ready to release it on July 7th through Remote Control Records. The combination of both tracks should be unstoppable!!!
As well as Bushwacka!'s bootleg the new 'Love Story' package includes Tim Deluxe's new vocal mix that is also based around the KOT sample, plus a new 'Love Story' remix by Stanton Warriors and a very large new house track by Layo & Bushwacka! called 'Where Did We Go Wrong?'
Since the release of their critically acclaimed debut album ‘Low Life’ on The End Recordings in 1998, Layo & Bushwacka!’s profile as internationally respected producers and DJs has grown and taken on a life of it’s own. With residencies in Brazil, Argentina, Ibiza and of course their spiritual home, The End in London, their DJ-ing skills have earned them an almost reverential position amongst the dance cognoscenti. Their second album ‘Nightworks’ pushed things further forward whilst keeping it underground and totally real. It won rave reviews across the board and firmly established them as two of the most innovative producers around.
Layo & Bushwacka! have also transferred the album to a live arena. Having successfully done this at a number of European festivals, the timing duo returned to Australia in March for the Two Tribes festival tour.

In 2001, Layo and Bushwacka! knocked out the single “Love Story” (simply called “Untitled” on the initial white-label pressing), which was built around a bass line they sampled from the intro of “Mongoloid” from Devo's 1978 debut album. “I brought some samples into the studio,” says Layo. “When I played Matt the beginning of ‘Mongoloid,’ he thought it was a good bass line, and it all went from there. We felt it needed some kind of vocal, so I went through some Nina Simone records I have. When we heard that vocal, it vibed and felt right.”
However, the vocal part was surrounded by instrumentation that clashed with the music that Layo and Bushwacka! had already recorded for the song. Fortunately, Bushwacka! is an accomplished engineer, so he surgically removed the offending instruments in the sample. “I used a combination of EQing and notch filtering,” says Bushwacka! “I just kept taking away and adding frequencies until it sounded the way I wanted it to. I also did some time-stretching and adjusted the tuning. I have a lot of experience doing mixing, so I know how to balance EQs so that everything fits together.”
“That track brings people together because it's a mix of a lot of different elements,” says Layo. “Some people like it because they know the Devo tune, but then there are others who like it just because it's a good bass line. The vocals and the instrumentation take it to an entirely different place.”
