Default Balancing Big End?

Yup im a bit thick here what is ment by balancing your big end?

Basicly pistons, rods, crank, flywheel and clutch cover all balanced by a machine shop. Usually only crank, flywheel and cover are done by us DIY'ers.

So the mass manufactured engines like balanced a window licker on a unicyle. What the point in doing that and how'd it affect driving then?
