Default PC Question - What can't cope?

Recently upgraded the PC, runs pretty well, except when I play Generals online, every 5 mins or so it goes REALLY slow for about 2 minutes then it is back to it's fast self. Which is rather annoying, especially for the bloke I am pounding into the ground

Spec is;

3.0 Pentium 4 with a 3.5 P4 fan and heatsink
1 gig RAM
GeForce FX5200 256mb Graphics card

Is that graphics card letting the rest down?

All I got open is MSN and Outlook. From what I can remember it runs fine, or at least better when playing a Skirmish against the computer (not online).

Generals does that during multiplayer, nothing to do with hardware.

Me and a few mates used to play it over a 10mb LAN, all with reasonable PCs and it still did it. It seemed worse on 3rd party maps, ones which came with the game worked ok.

Your PC is more than capable of running Generals, he's talking out of his arse.

Tony mate, with those games it has to run at the same speed at both ends, so it could be his slowing it down or yours!

Thanks mate, thats reassuring

Phil - I did think about it could be his, because mine loaded faster at the start, but then when he was destroyed I carried on playing for a bit and it still did it. Which made me think it is either my PC, or the server/ connection.

Thanks for the help guys

Yeah I know it's only Ł50, but I spent SO much on it, I could really go another Ł50, I also have an RST to pay for lol. I'm on Broad Band, with no downloads or anything going on. Maybe I will try a smaller map and exit everything next time.

What card would you recommend then, as a future upgrade?

well for starters one individual cant lag the whole server...
(not in any modern game anyway) howefver if one person has an appauling ping then it can APPEAR to go tits up as any updates from the player are received at long intervals so their movement isnt smooth.

also to understand why MSN wont lag the game youve got to understand how packet based netwoprk protocols work (ie TCPIP) then when you look at exactly what data MSN is sending/receiving and exacly what bandwith the game needs to send/receive then you see that it wont affect anything...

or worse case scenario you'll get another say 10ms or so when someone logs in for a moment or something...

I think I know what the problem is.

The graphics card is getting too hot when playing on latge maps against alot of teams and when alot starts happening it bogs down. I took the side of the case off last night it dropped 3c in temp and ran a bit better. Looks like a need a decent cooler for the gfx card.

Thanks for your help guys.

taking the side off the case should not aid cooling (unless its a REALLY wank case) infact you'll normally find that it runs cooler with the case properly sealed (again, thats if the case is half decent, and also providing its not trapped in a corner or anything daft)

its to do with how air flows thru it n hit, but i cant be arsed to go into great detail about why that is...
