Default FAO COMPUTER PEOPLE. NETWORK PROBLEM....

got a problem with the internet/network conection on the laptop on our home network.

basic setup using a hub and patch cables, shown here but does the job..

both the computer downstairs(main) and my computer upstairs both are fine and have no problems. but the laptop wont connect to the internet/network. when on the desktop on the laptop the LAN icon in bottom corner says 'connected, 100.0 Mbps'. but as ive said there is no internet conection. i think it may just be a setting somewhere that needs changing but ive tried my best and couldnt sort it.

BTW all conected through ethenet ports

any help would be much appreciated

i am using a DLink 10/100 ethernet switch and in the current setup it all worked fine, using XP network setup wizard on all machines to create a home network, internet worked on all 3 machines until recently and that is the problem i have. it must be a setting on the laptop that has been changed as it worked when first concected like that at chrismas time

Assuming it's windows XP, on the working PC, do this:

Click "start"
Click "run"
Type "cmd" and press Enter.
(In command prompt) Type "ipconfig /all" and press Enter.

There will probably be a lot of gumph there you don't need to worry about. You're looking for something like...

"Ethernet adaptor blahblahblah" without "Media disconnected" underneath it.

Note down the number next to "IP address" (usually something like 192.168.0.xxx) and the subnet mask (usually 255.255.255.0).

Also note whether "DHCP Enabled" is Yes or No.

-----------------------

Now do the same on the laptop.

-----------------------

What you should have is two sets of two numbers. Both IP addresses should begin with the same 3 lots of digits, e.g. 192.168.0.

Both should also have the same "DHCP enabled" - either yes or no.

-----------------------

Assuming your laptop isn't right on one of these, to change it, right click on the network connection icon on your laptop and click "Open network connections".

Right click on the network connection (probably called "local area connection x") and click "properties".

Click on "Internet protocol (TCP/IP)" under "This connection uses the following items"

Click the "Properties" button underneath.

In the general tab, you will normally select "Obtain an IP address automagically" and "Obtain DNS server address automagically".

On the "Alternate configuration" tab...

Set it to user configured.

Set the IP address to the first three groups of numbers of the working PC's IP address (e.g. "192.168.0") and for the last number, make one up that isn't the same as your other PCs. I usually pick one randomly from between 180 and 220 since most systems will use numbers around the 1-100 range first.

Set the "subnet mask" to be the same as the other (working) PC's - usually 255.255.255.0

Your default gateway is the IP address of the computer connected the internet - this is usually "192.168.0.1", but it for simplicity, assume it will always be the first three numbers of the working computer's IP address (sorry this is so long winded!), so probably "192.168.0" and then ".1".

Your "Preferred DNS server" and "Preferred WINS server" addresses should be the same as "Default gateway".

(I've made some assumptions here about you using Windows XP - this should all work for the setup you've described).

----------------------

Finally, click "Ok" and "Ok" again. There will normally be anything up to a 30 second wait while Windows sorts its shizz out.

If you still can't connect after this, the following should get you up and running:

(If the command prompt window isn't still open)
Click "start"
Click "run"
Type "cmd"
Type "ipconfig /renew" and press Enter.
Assuming no error messages come back about your network adaptor, type "exit" and press Enter.

If the internet still doesn't work, you're fucked. Go out and play in the sunshine instead

/al - all false and mistaken information given here is (c) someone else...

I agree with project ST. Go with static ips etc. It wont let you down, wireless will and its far slower than cabled. And your ISP wont be having a fit btw
