They are talking on Radio One News today about banning the sale of fags to under 18's.


What do you rekon to this, please discuss.


I am a non smoker and I dont think it will stop anything if the ban gets placed as it will make youngsters just wanna do it more.

I started at 12/13 and I know if the police brought me home with a fine for my parents I would have had hte living shit kicked out of me and wouldnt have smoked.

But there wasnt so I smoked loads!

Had this law over here for ages, I reckon its a good thing.

..and they always sneak away outside to light their fags several times a day. I bet some of the heavy smokers at my work do 7 hour work + 1 hour smoking. I should get paid for not smoking.

agree with them banning it till they turn 18, as andreas said in places i have worked previous to the job im in now, ive always said ive smoked an have went for "smoke" breaks just because my mate had about 4 more breaks aday then i did just because he fancyed smoking its a joke,

the sooner they ban it the better, or atleast put the prices on fag up an lower feul prices instead.

In scotland its great to come home from a night out & not smell of smoke & have to breathe all that crap in .
2 weeks ago i was in birmingham with my mate went for a bar lunch & there ws ppl smoking it was horrible.

The only thing is at 16 you can get married & have kids but you cant buy a drink or have a fag thats crazy

Pointless exercise really. Its the same with under 18's drinking. If they cant buy it then a friend of a friend etc etc will buy it for them. Wont change a thing. Proof of this is how many under 16's smoke at the moment? Loads

What he said. Kids start smoking from about 12-13 in my experience, a lot of them get addicted, some of them have already quit by the time its actually legal for them to smoke. Why make a law thats entirely pointless, is already disobeyed, and thats only going to make the law more of an ass. This is a lot of people, politicians including, running their mouths about how they think things should be, without taking a minute to notice the way things actually are.

I think a better law change would be to increase the legal alcohol drinking age to 21, and ban all public drinking on the streets (so alcoholic drinks cannot be comsumed except in lisenced premesis' and your own home)

And none of the "brown bag" shit that America has either. It should be NO (open containers) alcoholic drinks on the streets at all, and if caught with an open container you should be fined.

That would, IMO, be a good start towards solving the problems our country has with gangs of kids grouping on streets, getting shit faced on White Lightning and smashing up shopfronts, bus stops, phone boxes, stealing your car, etc.....

lets face it if the age limit is 16, some 13-14 year old will look old enough to buy them, if it is raised to 18 at least it will help stop realy young kids getting served

but some i think u should still be able to smoke in like a few in the town

and the rest are all non smoking pubs

and they should put buying fags up the 18 but if u look under 21 u should get i.d the same as drink

Agree'd, I think they should both be raised to 18 as well as at 16 the vast majority of kids are not even close to being respsonsble enough. Hell I know some 20+ year olds who I wouldn't want anywhere near children.

yeah ban it, i started when i was 14 and im now 31 i stopped at new year total cold turkey if i craved for a ciggy i just looked at my son and that was the craving gone, but i know if i did`nt stop he would start when he was old enough.

I think at 16 your still not old enough to think straight about actions you take in life and if you start at 16 buy the time your 18 your a total addict who prob wishes you never started.

One of the major problems with smoking being 16 is that the message sent out is that it isn't as major thing as drinking or driving or, as mentioned, marridge.

Its pointless putting an age limit on it, most kids can get fags as easy as they get drink and Ganja... and age limit like 18 would serve no real purpose....

Anyone who smokes near a child should be shot... ok maybe ones who smoke in the car with the windows up or like i saw again today a girl with a baby in a carrier havin a fag, the baby was about a week old!!!!

It drives me mad when you have to walk into a shop with my 3 yr old and have to walk through a smokescreen to get inside the shop as there are 10 people outside by the door puffing their brains out.

Good to ban it for under 18's.

Only a few kids have mates over 18 that are immature enough to buy kids fags.

IMO looking for someone under 18 asking for fags is a lot easier than trying to guess whether they are 16 or not. You can tell an 18 year old over a 16 year old. Lots of maturing.
