Default Will a Duratec Head fit on a Zetec Block?

I know they are 2 totally diferent engines and the answer is probably NO.

But has anyone actually had a look to see what is involved in doing it?

Reason i ask is the zetec block is easy to mount in most Escorts and fiestas but the Duratec is not.

Matt.

duratecs have the inlet at the front and the zorst at the back, zetecs other way round obviously.

not sure if oil/water ways are the same cos the duratec is an ally block so may be different

the focus RS and ST170's are actually ZETEC engines with modded head and a duratec cam cover!

Lewis- FOCUS RS ISNT a Duratec! Thought youd know that!

Focus RS, ST170, and all that bollocks badged as Duratecs are just ZETECS, they jus calling em Duratecs to sound fancy.

REAL Duratecs are fucking quality engines and nothing like Zetecs (barring 2litre 16v inline 4, lol) IMO gona be the future MASSIVE power ford engine, cant remember the specs, but even as std the head n bottomend are quite weapons

2.0l duratecs are rather easy to get 200bhp out of, just a chip and t/bs iirc

This is the main reason i ask.

The Duratec is toooo difficult to get fittet into a ERST or FRST but the Zetec block bolts in without too much hasstle and you can keet the standard gearbox etc etc.

But I knoe the Duratec heads are extremly well designed and capable of BIG power.

I don't know much else about them which i why i have asked.

I know there is a thousand things to consider, but wondered if anyone has actually really looked into it in depth.

Matt.

No not a direct replacement at all from what i've heard.

I believe they are a Mazda designed engine.
Engine mounts, gearbox mounts etc are totally diferent.

Stanard Duratec heads flow more air than a standard YB Cossie heads...just thought I'd add that.

Saying that, what cylinder head you think I am running?

A 1.3 X-Flow? 2port A-Series? Flymow Hovermaster?

So i take it its not THAT hard to run a Duratec head on a Zetec block eh? Bloodyhell, bet its still a mission tho, suprised anything mates up at all, but then again, CVH and Zetec do too...

all new fez/mundano/fucus have them
Now I'm confused

I have a '98 focus which is definitely a zetec but I have been looking into dooing a turbo conversion. Was gonna start off fairly easily and aim for bout 200 ponies, but with the intention of getting bigger and better as and when I can afford to insure it Now if this Duratec engine is so much better would this not be a worthwhile investment considering my future plans and if it is in a focus it surely shouldnt be too hard to make the swap ?

ouch, too much thinkin for today I think, this isnt why I come to work

98 isn't very new now mate.

The Duratec uses different gearbox etc so you would probably need a dona car to swap all the parts from.

The Zetec turbo route have been known to produve 250 - 300hp without toooo much effort.

How comes ya can't fit a duratec into a Fiesta out of curiosity??

Im fitting a 2.0l 16v Zetec into my 1.8 16v XR2i Fiesta out of a Mondeo, but if a Duratec will go in then I may fit that instead. Any ideas??

yeah I know that a '98 aint new anymore, but didnt realise that they had changed the engine in focus in later models

I'm just in the research stage of the conversion at the moment really, still trying to find out what is best to get in order for me to be able to extract a good chunk of power and torque without it blowing up every month, it is a ford still afterall .

I'm sure it is posible to fit, however you would need one off engine mounts fabricated, it has to use the Duratec gearbox, drive shafts etc.
I was only wondering about fitting the Duratec head to the Zetec coz of how easy the Zetec block is to fit etc.

Very nice engines the duratecs

Ive got all the spec sheets here, without 100% checking, you cant get a duratec head on a zetec block, totally different design etc. (ie, almost external oil returns from the head)....

But same "Family" of enignes.

The Duratec name is a brand, a family of engines, to promote it a bit, they stuck the badge on a few high publicity cars, ie, Focus RS & ST170 (which were infact earlier Zetecs).

Theres alsorts on the Duratec (propper!) family, 1.8 16v, 2.0 16v, 2.3 16v, 2.5 V6 and 3ltr V6.

The 2.0 and 2.3 straight fours are awesome engines once you get round a few issues

I may be wrong as im sure Mike Gurney said it was a custom cast one

But, an informed guess would say that the ST170 head would be the best to use, if using a Zetec type bottom end, by far the best zetec head there is....and "badged" as a Duratec for marketing purposes, probably now got an original cam cover on, with the VVT in the bin....

Miles away?
