Software help please! Mini DV to DVD programs. Which one?

Have a Sony mini DV camcorder, came with some crappy software that won't actually let you convert the films to DVD format for some reason, only VCD.
Any recommendations for what software to use? Something ididot proof would be nice.

What format it the file in when it's offloaded the camera? Mpeg? Avi? Divx?
