Ranj,

I'm sure it can be done for less than 3k, by someone who charges less labour.

SCC is vat registered company, and works as an independant garage. As such, it will charge more than someone who's working from home, as the labour rate is higher to compensate.

Imagine if you took your car to Ford for the work carried out. Our local dealer charges £85 per hour + vat. That's what they charge, plain and simple.

At the end of the day, the management swap was commented on by someone very good with electrics as being one of the best he'd seen. Could have paid a lot less, and that not been the case.............

Rob seems reasonable cheap so to him.

Personally I like DIY, its more interesting but each to thier own.

I do think IMHO that £2600 was steep for a long block, but maybe thats what they command these days from breakers. (haven't seen any reply from any breaker yet either) especially as the extra bits were not included.

Not keen on trial by forum, I don't think its fair. Just look at Pon, Maria never said anything bad about SCC.

Like the T&A discount too

Ranj,
Funny as I remember that being about the price that MAD, SCS and TS have all quoted in the past - hence my comment about ask Mark for a quote to do this .

At the end of the day, I know it can be done cheaper (A1 does do it cheaper than this), but when you take into account that this was done as well as all the other bits mentioned by Rich, it doesn't look so bad a picture as you are trying to imply (just like you were "trying" to justify your £10k+ 400bhp engine by Mark - when you take into account some of the things you mention, it doesn't look so bad ).

Shit luck honey! Have to agree with the others that it's the second hand engine's fault, not the work carried out by SCC, but i haven't seen any evidence of anyone actually blaming SCC? It's all just been twisted round. I feel gutted for you and the amount of money you've spent. I bought my car and straight away had to fit a new gearbox which wasn't cheap!!!! (I would like to state that i knew when buying the car that i would need a new gearbox and am in no way incriminating the lovely bloke i bought it from)
Maria.... for you babe.

mine has been as good as gold cost me very little in 10 years.

I just think Maria has been very unlucky.

And the cost rises sharply with the power and modifications you do.

If you can recommend a piece of equipment that can detect whether or not the head gasket is about to blow i'd gladly go and buy one......

Seeing as we were told the replacement engine had only covered 10k and had a brand new head on it why would we have thought it nessesary

After this much greif think i'll go back to being "St Albans Car Clinic" and knock this performance shit on the head

Guted for you and Clive Maria

Know how your feelin as I've just brought a new car to replace our XR and the damn thing is now gonna cost me a wedge to sort out . It aint great but there's nowt that can be done.

Can't help but feel some vultures are jumping in to grab their pound of flesh though adn SCC seem to have been unfairly maligned in this situation. I've not seen Maria criticise directly only people jump in with misinformed assumptions. That's just my feelings though. (*climbs off soapbox*)

Hope this all gets sorted

Don't take it to heart Maria.

This stuff sucks big time. Saddly all we can do is dust ourselves off, learn from what's happened and try again.

No you haven't said anything of the sort,
Its maybe what you haven't said thats giving this impression though....

its the other clueless pricks that seem to think they know the whole ins and outs of the whole thing that piss me off......

at the end of the day its the headgasket that looks like it failed and caused the additional problems due to getting excessivly hot, no one could have seen that coming, its just shit luck,
i feel for ya Maria i really do, as ive said on the phone many times over the whole thing, i wish there was something i could do......

Its kind of irrelivant how much you spent as 99% of the bits wont need replacing again, with anyluck as i said before a set of pistons and rings will get her running again.......

Yeah its called a dial out gauge on the face of the cylinder head.

The point I was making was that SCC didn't suggest some basic engine checks might be a worthwhile investment and hence suggest it to the customer.

Best of luck sorting it out Maria.

Well I have just read this thread and I really feel sorry for ya Maria, if it had been me, I think I would have stripped the rest of the car by now and sold it on.
SCC seem to have done alot of work at a good price, and I know they always look after me when I am down there too.
Best of luck getting it sorted Maria, and Rob I will see ya tomorrow!

_Ben_,
Yeah its called a dial out gauge on the face of the cylinder head.
Sorry Ben thats absolute Bollox
This engine was a fully assembled powerunit as i understand it and fibrious 611 gaskets mainly fail due to material deterioration and corrosion around the exhaust side coolant channels 95% of the time.... what use is your DTi in assesing this condition? Zero.

Maybe Maria should have asked for the engine to be stripped and refreshed, but again, given she chose a decent soundin second hand unit at reasonable cost, id say she took a calculated risk to reduce expenditure..... il say no more as it will be covering old ground again.. i just hate to see the tuner getting criticised here when unless theres a large piece of the story i havent heard, its just purely bad luck...

At 1st glance it reads that SCC have supplied and fitted a 2nd hand engine for £9k......

but when it boils down to it and the total is broken down the picture unravels into....

Engine supplied by customer
Complete management swap (inc all sensors, ecu, loom, injectors etc etc)
Shiny bits and more shiney bits (i love a bit of )
4 new 18" tyres
New Alcon clutch
Swapping bits over (due to being a 2wd donor engine)
etc etc etc

Now i worked at SCC for over 2 years and i can hold my hand on my heart and say that Rob is an enthusiast NOT a rip off merchant, he'd help out any number of people and gain nothing in return because of his love of RS's.....

A few weeks ago it was ML getting a hard time now SCC whos next then???? SCS, MSD, MAD etc etc

People need to see the whole picture b4 making a judgement......

Steve

PS.....

Maria chin up....... i've been there and done it with my old Saffy, things do eventually get better (trust me they do)......... there were times i could have just taken the Saff to a scrappers and said "crush the fucker"
