Main advantages of them are:

They are FAR cheaper to make

They dont give as much sideloading

They can take high shock loads

Disadvantages

They arent as durable and will wear out a lot quicker, the case hardening comes away then they chew themsleves to bits in a few 10s of thousands of miles at best normally

They are noisey

The metal from the case hardening wearing off them ends up in your oil

Im sure bernie or someone can give me info though

Personally i like the noise, but not a daily driver cause i reguarly do 3-4 hours on the motorway.

The gearbox I'm looking at has straight gears 1-3 So I suppose long distance journeys won't be too bad?

Not sure why you want SC gears at all?

But yeah that should be easy enough to live with

Get it mate. They sound amazing IMO. You get used to the noise. Especially if its on 1, 2 and 3 which are straight cut.

Loved the sound.... It was a bit noisey... about the same as having a loud exhaust

Paul, Yes, they are loud, but it's not that bad a noise, and you'll find it adds to the fun. The best bit on mine was a large mettallic bang everytime you change gear, sounded so cool! Only thing is though, due to the noise you'll think you're in a rallycar and rag it everywhere, that's what I did anyway, but then again, It was a mk2 Escort!
You get used to the noise I spose, all adds to it ya know.

Lol, spot on

On minis its far worse getting into your oil of course, cause it goes round and trashes the engine too not just the box!

if your car is a road car dont do it, it will ruin the car simple as, most people you will ask will have never had to live with a s/c box. i would never fit one to a road car simple as.

Mines a sport box with only 1st gear s/c and it sounds great. All other gears are helical cut and it works a treat,it can also handle abuse. With having a big turbo you have to knock it into 1st for really slow corners and the noise is great.Has a really long 1st gear too so you can hold it for ages.

mine would do sub 4 seconds on gearing like that to 60 - so quite the opposite really, as long as youve got the power to pull it !

Paul, Spadgeroo & Dunc have both had PD boxes IIRC, hopefully they'll see this when they're back from the show and give you their thoughts.

Fair enough, bet it eats clutches while doing it though!

Straight cut 1&2 are cool i loved the sound

However i wouldnt go for the input shaft too as all gears otehr than 4th is noisy then

But they dont break as often as std but yor rear diff will if you do 7k launches with side stepping teh clutch
