I'm looking into doing mine this Summer - anyone got a price per square foot and also some hints and tips for what's best.

I want quite a large area done so I'm going to contact my local timber merchants who manufacture the stuff

I am doing mine myself Iam no pro but its easy as fook imo...

pity u dont live near me as I would help you....

5" wide decking green (slightly cheaper than brown) 4.2m lengths is 6.04 plus vat a length, remembering that you have a gap that ammount works out to be .5 of a m or there abouts so double Ł12.08 for 1m2

the work out your area say 30 x 12.08 gives you Ł362.40 plus vat for the decking

then you need 4x2 or 6x2 to sit it on at 5.36 plus vat per length of 4.2m work out at 600 centres how many length you need multiply

box of 75mm decking screws Ł10.90

bag of half inch to dust and 5/6 bags of cemment

and 30m2 of terram...(black stuff put down to stop weeds) not sure how much this is tho forgot to ask

And hey presto youe have decking

Si

is it as easy as they make it look though?
build a ladder frame, put bits of wood on top
and finished?

surely not

no its not as easy as those tele programs suggest. it depends on the actual area itself. many can be complicated due to the area itself. many times its a unique design and so builders can often take advantage of that but not me mate !

this will give you a idea but like bigwelsh said every one is different to a certain degree. as a rule i would leave no bigger gap than 450mm centres between the rafters but thats just me . makes a very tight strong frame and then the noggins stop the wood bowing and also push all the rafters straight and gets rid of any bows you mite already have!!

eveyone is different depend on th the size of area and wood !!

Woodz77,
I wish I had known you did decking mate, I've just about finished laying 32square metres worth.

Still to put the ballastrades(sp) on though cos I cant decide which style I like best and the cost is always going up. Still, will look nice once its done I suppose.

Thanks for the information - I'll see what deal I can get with the local timber merchants for the bits needed.

As an extra note - what treatment would you recommend for it as I know it's got to be harder wearing than the treatments you get for fences etc.

Cheers,

Andy

i'm only after decking about 6 m2 so there isn't a foot drop from the house to the garden
does it matter that i'll be putting it onto concrete?
i'll also have to have it so that i can get to the drain covers that are going to be underneath (thats why there's the big drop and no patio on top)

can i just put in an access hole or would the whole lot need coming up again?

Just incorporate an access hole - perhaps make a round wooden hatch you can take out when you need to access the drains.

That's what I'm planning to do, I'm sure someone with some actual experience will put me right though.

As for concrete - I think that would be better than any other way of mounting it as it should stop the wood from rotting.

If anyone knows of decent treatment for the wood I'd like to know what's what

Cheers,

Andy

No, theres two option there,

Option1, you can create an access panel, wherebye you lay the framework and incoroprate your hatch HOLE in it, then lay the decking to suit round it, make another frame the size of your hatch then panel that frame with decking.

Option2, You can lay your decking over your drain and screwing the boards down that go over the man hole so they dont need to be ripped out every time you need to be in the drain
