i dont wanna scare you here but tought shit im going to!
i broke the bone along the side of my hand and its known as a boxers fracture. basically the bone broke and my main knuckle for my pinky had curled kinda back under my hand. this had to be reset and they gave me gas and the doc had to dig his fingers under into my hand and pull the bone into place.
FUCK ME it was sore
if that happens again theres no way im doing it on gas

You wont feel a think because they'll give you a local anesthetic. As chip says they don't want to use gas because of the times people haven't woken back up again.
I had some work done on my toe and while I could feel and hear things such as the scapel scrapping on the bone there was no pain. Sore afterwards though, but healing pain isn't so bad to tollerate.

I'm with Chip on this, Generals scare the shit out of me. My bro in law is an Anaesthetist too and has explained how little risk there is involved but I still wouldn't have one unless totally necessary.
Having said that, I had a caudal epidural last year with just a local and it didn't kick in until 10 minutes after they shoved what can only be described as a knitting needle up my spine. Felt like being fisted in the ass [I would imagine, not tried it yet ].
You'll be fine mate, it's the pain after that's worse

I was in hospital for an Operation on my hand & arm last week.
The anaesthetist explained the procedure for a Local however being out for count whilst they were doing there stuff appealed more so General it was.
I was taken to a small room just before entering Theatre. A nurse jabbed me with a needle with a plastic drip like thing attached(which was inserted to a small veign in my hand).
The anaesthetist then handed the nurse two small bottles of fluid(anaesthetic) which was fed into the plastic drip, which in turn entered my bloodstream and I was is lala land.
I remember having a laugh with them prior to falling asleep about the body peircings they were going to carry out whilst I was under
I woke up several hours later, work all carried out successfuly and relativly pain free(I say relativly as one of the peircings is taking a little getting used 2 )and was back home later the same evening.
Ive no problems with Generals and would choose them over a Local anyday.
The thought of feeling the surgeon hammering and pulling whilst bones are detached and fused together just doesnt appeal to me.

I work in a hospital as a anaesthetic assitant, totally nothing to worry about with generals, as long as your honest about the last time you ate and drank and any allergies you have
Hever had anybody wake up yet, probably due to my big bat
