Default ok seriously, a RWD conversion....how hard?

be wondering this for a while now.

with all mates mate having fast fwd cars and me not being a massive fan of bigger cars.
how hard is it to RWD something?

im an engineering apprentice anyway. and im just about to finish the apprenticeship.
im pretty good with the tools and have a welder, air compressor and most hand tools.
i even have a pit in my mums garage that i dug one day when i was bored.

with so little grip to be had in high powered fwd cars i see RWD the only way forward.
but the only RWD car i really fancy is a cossie and i can afford to buy, insure or run one.

and i would get a lot more enjoyment out of making one anyway. (i get bored very easily and like to play with things)

ive got a 2 ltr nova, and my mates have things like 200bhp xr2s. another mate is also building a crazy powered orion.

i was thinking probably along the lines of a fiesta or nova to do the conversion on.

the fiesta i would build a zetec turbo for, and the nova i would use the calibra turbo engine.

is this a realistic job to take on, or am i kidding my self?

im not gonna be hurt if EVERYONE says fuck off u stupid kid, u dont stand a chance. it will only save me time, money and also many lonly nights for my girlfriend.

Daft thing is that generally the hardest thing about it is sorting out the steering!

Nearly all FWD cars have the rack right in the way.

I cant see it being cheaper to insure than a non home made RWD car of similar performance though TBH

Make more sense to just by a 200sx or something IMHO

i know it would make sense, but most my ideas dont make sense.

i would just love something different. the insurance on my nova is only 500 quid and im only 20.

i would rather pay the same amount on insurance and own a unique car than a normal car.

but in general do u think it would be possible with enough time, money, effort and knowledge?

Mid engined has other advantages too, more grip off the line and better weight distribution.

Superior to front engine RWD IMHO, but im biased as i have one, lol

Having converted a Focus from FWD to RWD, I can confirm that the steering is where most effort is required.

The reason is FWD uses REAR (of front axle line) steering.
Whereas RWD uses FRONT ( of front axle line) steering, as the gearbox is in the way.

Front and Rear steer racks are different, the pinnion is on the opposite side of the rack.
You will have to find a Front steer rack that will fit, not usually a problem as Ford have had many variations over the years.

The next problem is that moving the rack to the front (of axle line) means you need the steering arm on the suspension forward of the axle line instead of to the rear. Still not a problem as Ford have had many suspension setups.
Front subframe bit of Fab and Weld.
Transmssion tunnel, a bit of Fab and Weld.
Rear Axle / IRS bit of Fab and Weld.

Sorted of you go, good luck.
