I use that programme, WAVEPAD, and it works great for me. Simply open virtually any file-type music track (WAV, MP3, WMA, ACC, M4A, etc) into it, and you can split it, cut bits out, trim it,change tempo, volume, pitch, all sorts of crap
And it's freeware

Woodz, WAVEPAD is soooooo easy!
Open the programme, click the OPEN FILE button, and select the MP3 you want to split. It loads into a new subwindow, showing a green "chart" of the audio (will probably start playing too. You can use the fast forward and rewind buttons to get the the point you wanna split, or you can click on the green "chart" to the point you wanna get to. Notice the counter in the bottom right corner - helps with timing
All I do is back it up a few secs before I wanna split it, let it play and hit the ESC button (which is STOP ) where I want to split the track.
Then, go to EDIT, scroll down and click SPLIT INTO TWO AT THIS POINT.
Thats it - it's split!
Once you get the hang of it, WAVEPAD is great - so much more than just splitting tracks. You can cut tracks up into bits, remix em, add bits, repeat bits, add effects, make songs shorter or longer, change the EQ, change pitch, speed etc, make em louder or quieter - so much in it!
I have taken fairly good songs, cut em about, put em back together and "tweaked" parts for volume, added sections and repeated xections, and simply removed complete sections, and have a wicked "custom" remix of the original MP3 You can layer stuff too, so you can take a sample, and layer it over the top of a tune - the list goes on!!!
