My Easter 2006 Nurburgring story... With over 200 picture's.
Well, what a trip
Some incredible highs, and also some really contrasting lows, but now i am home safely with Nicole i would'nt change a thing for teh world!!
We set off on our Nurburgring trip with Dan (Ex Jamsport) on Wednesday morning, with the simple brief to meet up with Kim n Stu in the Rs2000 about halfway and convoy down to Folkestone to meet up with Phil (IMA) for a few beers, a meal and a good night's sleep before we hit teh Eurotunnel at 11am next morning.
We detoured a couple of hours into Birmingham unexpectedly to pick up a parcel for a good friend and carry it into Europe for him and yet still made the Hotel in plenty of time for an easy hours kip before getting showered and ready for food and beer. The journey from Blackpool to Folkestone ended up being approx 8hours.
That night we all had a great time, we ate good food and we enjoyed great company. Sadly Phil and his lady couldnt make it, so i ate and drank his portions... Nothing went to waste... lol.
Some pics:
The Engine to take us to Germany:
The pudding to take Dan to germany. lol
Female Frolics:
We all got up early on Thursday morning, headed out to teh Eurotunnel and met up with the rest of the British convoy... Chip, Mongo, DanFez and crew, Alex, Jay, Fast ford men and more... the atmosphere was starting to liven up, and apprehension was apparent in the air...
Only a couple of pics:
When we got to teh Eurotunnel boarding que, we discovered the train was delayed and we will have an extra 30mins wait.... not a big issue, in fact, its a great time to grab a bacon roll and a brew. Result.
When we finally hit the train, and our trip under the Channel into Europe begins... teh car stereo's come on, windows are down and feet are beginning to tap. Excitement is brewing up at last...
Once we hit the other side, we start to make some fast progress, across France and into Belgium, meeting up along the way with Mike Rainbird and his convoy of serious cars that include Effe in his Escort (Looony), Cossie Chris from carnoisour and lots of others... 150mph is exceeded many times as a little warm up once we enter Germany and its legal...
I didnt personally get any pictures of teh convoy, but got more into teh pictorial swing of things once we had arrived. I must say it was bloody nice to get out of teh car at our hotel after 6hrs driving, say hello to our friend Edgar whom owns the place and get our things unpacked.... the holiday has officially now started and everyone is on a serious high.
First night: (Thursday)
We went to the F1 pits area Museum restaurant/bar, unsure what its actually called. My only comments on this place are the same as every time we go there. The company is fantastic, the atmosphere is pretty good, the food is pretty poor, and teh service is worse than teh food... But none of that was going to affect us really, we were finally at teh Nurburgring having our first food and drink of teh holiday and we chose this venue sensibly as its one of teh few local, and easy to find places thats big enough to squeeze us all into. Tomorrow... we hit the ring, many people for their first time ever... the excitement is growing and people are getting a little nervous i sense... The night ends with us all safely tucked up in bed by about 1am.
Friday is upon us:
Everone is awake early and buzzing..... all the bonnets are up and checks are being made... the atmosphere this time is electric and it gets me in the party mood. Nicole and I have already bought our tickets from the fuel station so we hit the ring's toll booths as soon as we arrive and put in a nice easy sighting lap on the wet, foggy and greasy Nurburgring, when I complete the first lap, we change positions and Nicole puts her first lap of 2006 in too. The car feels good and we are both very happy with the various changes we made to teh shonky saff in preperation for the journey after our first experience of it in September 2005. All feels well and the car performs 100% as expected.
The majority of teh day was spent at teh busy Nurburgring, putting in faster and faster laps, getting the lines better and better. Nicole was doing the same taking her friends out too and having a great time. My time comes to go out with Mike R and this was, without doubt, one of teh highest point of teh trip for me, with Mike doing an Incredible lap and proving he does indeed deserve our little nickname for him "King Of the Ring" lol. I believe he then went on to do an 8min5secs around teh same time he took Nicole out (late on the Monday evening) so she must have experienced a very low 8min lap round there... nice one Mike, thanks for taking teh time to run us both around the ring, we both really appreciated it.
I was just in teh process of thanking Mike myself as we cruised down the straight, cooling off his car, and just as i was complimenting him on his driving and the fantastic car he has built, teh phone rings, and the resulting conversation drops me from my incredible high, to an all time incredible low... it was Nicole.. " Stu, I've come off.."
My first concern of course was for her and her passengers safety, she assured me they were both ok but Nicole was plainly very shook up and not making a great deal of sense in some ways, the convo was a pretty scary one given some of the carnage i had witnessed from crashes on the ring so far...
Apparently, and in her own words "I just got a little too confident, overshot a corner, overbraked the car, spun and hit the kerb Sideways. The tyre has deflated and come off teh rim and we cant get teh car back in motion so have called teh marshall's for recovery..."
I admit i was a little nervous, and just after i hung up the call and briefed Mike what had happened, i was told by another Brit almost immediately after exiting Mikes car, "Nicole's crashed, the car is fooked mate but Nicoles got out of it, I hope shes ok.." Then he simply drove off... Thanks for that scary 40mins pal, you know who you are.
The car was recovered back to teh hotel by a nice helpfull German recovery driver for a reasonable 175 Euros and a lot of the folk we were with came back to the hotel with us to try and help in some way. Offers of help via both personal labour and cash were made and will always be remembered, you know who you are, and i thank you all from teh bottom of my heart... Its great to know you have true friends in times of crisis.
When teh car was assessed properly: The damage was as follows:
OSR tyre deflated.
2 rims kerbed
Front splitter bent
Fuel tank dented and swirl pot come loose.
rear swinging arm or beam slightly bent. OS rear wheel approx 3mm too positive.
Exhaust hanger bent so exhaust catching prop until it warms through
On a serious note, the off happened at a place i think is called "Wehrsiefehn"(sp) Not a great place to come off at all, there's no run off whatsoever and plenty of concrete Armco to hit... Nicole and Kim where Lucky this time!!
On the topic of crashes and off's...
One of teh things that stuck out to me over teh week, is most people who asked or informed people about any crashes over teh weekend, or texted anything about accidents, never asked or advised about the passengers or drivers... they just seemed to enjoy teh fact cars where smashed... bizzare. Unsurprisingly, one of teh only people who had an off this week that DIDNT blame anyone or anything else was Nicole... when asked what went wrong, she just said "I ran out of talent, sorry" Quality. Top Girl, all any of us can ask is that we learn something from our errors and walk away unharmed physically...
That evening, we went to a place we know and love from our last visit.. a place called Pinnochio's in teh village of Adenau. Fantastic place, warm, friendle, cheap, and with fantastic food in incredible portions. The night ended at some time around 1am as we couldnt find a nightclub. lol
Sadly, again, i took no pictures, sorry.
Saturday:
Saturday morning was spent scouring the Eiffel moutains for a 215/40/17 Y Eagle F1. And to my amazement, we found one, thanks almost exclusively to our top hotel owner Edgar, who went out of his way yet again to find us a local tyre supplier who did performance tyres... and would you believe it was cheap too? Approx Ł110 fitted and balanced with the opposite tyre rotated and balanced to even out wear. Another high point... we were ready to hit the ring again after a short 20km drive... great news indeed!
We headed back to teh ring and joined the other chaps at a popular viewing point known as Showboat, this is where everyone capable shows off their car control... The ring taxis smoke their tyres here and often negotiate the corners with big powerslides... nice.
We got a few great pictures here before heading back to teh ring itself for some more laps ourselves...
The rest of Saturday Afternoon was spent either hammering round the ring having a bloody great time, and learning beyond all reasonable doubt that for some reason, our Eagle F1's were getting far too hot after only 2 laps...!! or mooching about in the Internationla Circuit pits, which we managed to blag entry into, for only Ł7.. yes "Ł7 pounds" There were some serious cars in here... full on Porshe and Ferrari GT cars...
We also visited Nurburg castle, and ate there too.
Nice place, great food and great service, well recomended indeed.
Sunday:
We got up after a bit of a lie in and went across to the ring for a couple of hours. Put in some pleasing laps in teh wet and then went across to eat and view the Motor racing exhibition. This place is well worth a visit.
Sunday evening was one of the highlights of my trip, it was spent at Sabine's Restaurant, a place called "Piston Klaus"... this place does steak like i have never tasted before!! It comes to you on a seriously hot slab of stone, and you cut and cook it to your own liking... incredible!! Some pictures of the evening follow
At the end of the night, the beer and food toll was quite high
Dan did the counting .
When we left that place, spirits where still high
And co-ordination low lol
Public toilets were few and far between
Monday:
Monday was spent hammering our car around teh ring as much as humanly possible...
The weather was good and the traffic pretty light.. this, driving wise, was my favourite day of all, and i got well into it and enjoyed each and every lap... of which this trip we completed around 30 all in all, so no pics of this day either, i was far too busy enjoying myself, sorry. But i did find 2 pics of our car on another site...
Monday evening we chose Pinochio's again due to its friendly staff and cheap food. Some more pics of our last night, aptly named, "the last supper..."
And that, as they say, was that.... We went home to bed, and awoke at 7am to get ready and pack... what a sad feeling as i packed away all my things and loaded up teh car for teh journey home...
Here's Nigel and his lady doing the same...
Earlier that week, we had all decided to chip in and buy Edgar, our hotellier for teh week, a model car, and after we quizzed him on his favourite cars, plumped for teh 1973 aircooled 2.7 Porsche 911. He also got a few quid in Euros from us and hopefully, was very happy with his tips. The fella was a great help all week, helping with tyres, translations, supply of pits and even the loan of some compressed air... lol. Your a gentleman Edgar, and we will stay with you on every trip to teh ring if you will have us there mate.
That just left us with a 320mile drive back to the Calis tunnel port, which we completed in record time, getting there some 2 hrs early, so we got an early crossing and made the 6hr drive back up to Blackpool without the original planned stop at Folkestone.
What did we we see in England almost right away? Static Traffic as far as teh eye can see. Welcome home.
All in all then, we covered 1835 miles, consumed massive amounts of petrol and 1/2 a pint of oil. Our personal expenditure was approx Ł2K all in. Not a cheap holiday all things considered, but one that was worth every penny as far as we are concerned.
It was great to meet lots of new people too such as Danfez and his friends, Mongo the small, Keiron whom we dont see much of outside the fitness forum and of course our oversees members such as Azrael and friends (Thanks for teh Vodka), and Speedy Geert and companions(Thanks for the choccies)as well as lots of old friends we dont get to see much of, such as Andy R and Steven RW from the UK and ON-UJAH from Germany... your all great great people and i can honestly say i didnt meet anyone this week that i would rather not have. Next time we must arrange a meeting on teh first night for ALL teh people from PF, so newcomers can meet everyone, instead of taking pot luck like this time...
Thanks go to all teh people we travelled and spent teh week with, you all know who you are and my fingers are getting tired now so i wont name you all. Thanks to you all for a great week, you all made it extra special in your own little ways and i hope you all come along next trip for more great times.
Thanks also must go to all the MSD customers who made the journey and put their faith in me to get their cars running at a level suitable for teh trip ahead. They sensibly let me inspect their cars beforehand, followed all my advice, did what i suggested needed to be done, and as a result, had trouble free journeys whilst lapping teh ring as hard as they possibly could and doing what i said "Drive her like you want to kill her, she will be fine now." Top work guys, and thanks for not only your friendships, but your business as well.
Heres Gracy, on a 9min lap....
A final thank you must go to Nick Lopez, (Sonic) He had plans to come along with a pal himself, but, as last year, was let down and couldnt come again, but he soldiered on and helped me till teh early hours on quite a few occasions to finalise parts of teh saff that i was unhappy with. Your a true mate Nick and it wont be forgotten, we WILL get you and that saff on the ring soon mate, so favours will be returned.
Some incredible highs, and also some really contrasting lows, but now i am home safely with Nicole i would'nt change a thing for teh world!!

A post I was looking forward to reading....
And it didn't dissapoint
Nicole.... There is no shame at all in admitting to what happened to you, as it can happen to everybody, but realising it and admitting to it dosn't happen too often
I hope you went back out again once the car was sorted as it looks like a fantastic experience
Once again Stu's pics show the social side is just as important and interesting as the driving experience (or do you all just like drinking and eating lol )

right then.......i got a few things to say!!!
first off,
Dan reminds me so so much of my image of the old "IMA" dunno if related or same person etc but putting faces to names, he is Ima in my eyes PMSL!!!
me and a load of my mates are planing on going to the nurburgring later in the summer, they have recently joined the Durham RSOC group (with my dis-approval because i have issues with certain people, well, one person in particular to be honest in this regional group but hope to iron the issues out over the next few weeks/months so we can carry on doing events like the nurburgring without punchups etc lol
i have posted a few weeks ago on here and it seems September is the best suited outing for us.
is it best to drive down to hull, or can we travel from north sheilds, or is there another cross chanell ferry in the north east/tees side?
i cant wait to unleash the cossies new T61/rallycross motor, or my mk3 escort upon the nurburgring!!!!!!!!!!
the only thing that bothers me is fuel consumption and fuel refill points!!
any help/info would be greatly advised!!!!!!!!
muchos thanks,
Sean
