BUT I can appreciate how good theyre supposed to be but, then again an MX5 is supposed to be one of the most well balanced cars available, I still wouldnt buy one though as i'd look like a spud in it.
Stooopid argument. If you like a spud its because you are ugly

If you want a Boxster with a roof buy a Caymen

Cars without roofs rock! here is the best one of all!

You misunderstand my argument, the car would look even more shit because I look so damn good.

I actually meant people that see you in it would think you were a spud, personally i'd always know that I look great in it

I just dont like cars without a roof, I think the car you posted looks stupid as well without one.

The only cars I actually think look ok are old american low rider convertibles. But then the fact that the have hydraulics makes up for the lack of a roof, and the fact that they were never designed to go fast or handle or even go around corners

Actually, I like Cobra's and that doesnt have a roof. However, I saw one once with a removeable hardtop and it looked so much better with the roof. The car looked complete.

Lee,
Before you harp on about the fact that you like convertibles so much, there is a reason for that and it is the "H" of "LMH" .

Now that looks good without a roof, but thats because the lines of the car dont incorporate a roof.

Come on, someone must agree with me about convertibles

None, but I never said I had. It's simply my own aesthetical point of view.

I thought we were simply talking about a design point of view, not how good the car drives/handles etc.

I wouldnt ever buy a convertible, well maybe with the exception of a caterham, cobra, ariel or something similar but then theyre not really convertibles as they werent designed to have a roof.

That's certainly a fair comment, if the car was designed with a roof and then it's taken off they do get the wobbles generally. Still would have a Roadster Murcielago over the hardtop. Actually, I'd have the Lambo over ANY other car !!!!

You see, if I could only have one car and one car only then it would be a Lancer MR FQ400. There are plent of other cars i'd like but the lancer is the one i'd have if I was only allowed one..

Nothing can touch that car for me. I'm easy to please

Think you're getting mixed up with convertible cars that were originally designed with a hardroof (ie Escort ) and pure convertibles when you talk about scuttle shake and ridgidity etc.
The Boxster was designed from day 1 to be a convertible, so works just as well hood up or down, preferably down tho...

I think the Cayman or however its spelt (shockingly shit name too) is better looking than boxter. But, it's getting expensive, and does it have the same handling prowes? The boxter has just come top in Auto Express's owner satisfaction survey too. To me the boxter is the next car up from an elise - slightly bigger and less nimble, but more solid and better to drive everyday

Just to put my oar in,

I would actually agree with 89XR2 on the matter of Convertibles, I have never really liked them either. I'm not suggesting that they have no place, but I am 6ft 5 tall, and that means that universally most of these cars I wont fit in, and the ones I do fit in I make look fucking ridiculous!

My wife owns an SLK Merc, which is the only exception in that I fit in it, but I cant drive it with the top down, because I feel like a total dick!

Most of the above convertible cars (zonda, lambo etc) are all based on great coupes (if you can call a supercar a coupe!) that have been modified to become convertibles. The original versions almost universally are better handling/ performing cars.

I have also driven a Porsche Boxter a lot, which I thought was a reasonably good car, and certainly handled well. I almost bought one. Then, unfortunately I got out of it with a back ache, and that was my lasting memory.

So as not to be seen as anti Porsche (which I am not) to be fair, the XK8 Convertible is a steaming pile of shit. The convertible means that there is less room behind the front seats, which means that the seats wont go back as far, hence I dont fucking fit!!!

That said, who here would honestly put their money on getting round the nurburgring in an XK8 (or R) faster than in a Porsche Boxter? Nobody I would guess! You could however argue that was not what the XK's are about! given the choice in which I'd rather drive from myh house to London and back in on the M5 then M4, I'd take the Jag any day, cos I could walk after I got back!!

I also recall someone before stating that the Boxter would out-handle a 911, and was only outdone by the 911 because of its larger engine. I have to say, the United Arab Emirates Porsche owners club was at the Ring when I was last there, and I saw several Porsche Boxters having their arses handed to them by 911's considerably older!!!!

My personal preference given much money and no particular agenda would be a 911 Carerra 4 (only if I cant afford a Turbo), NOT because I consider a boxter to be a poor mans 911 (which I do not), but because I was stunned by its proficiency around the Ring.

Rant over!

JJ

pmsl at all the people saying boxster is a poor mans 911 why does lee have one (better drivers car) you saying he can't afford a 911.

If phil can't afford a 911 so what (he probably can but would you want your wife driving around in a 911? she would probably kill herself not saying things about imas missis but just saying most of the birds Ive been out with cant handle a standard cossie never mind a 911).

And how can anybody who says a boxster is a poor mans 911 think to yourself what do you drive?

No one is doubting how much money Porkie has or hasnt got and to be honest who gives a fuck about how much money he has (No offence Porkie, but I only care about how much money I have, and that's not alot .)

I believe the general idea behind the boxster being a poor mans 911 is thus, Jeremy Clarkson was the first one to coin the phrase and it was his opinion that the boxster isnt as good as a 911 (driving/handling/whole package or whatever) but it IS a good car, so if you can't afford to buy a 911 then a boxster is the next best thing as it's cheaper and is as close to a proper 911 as you can get.

This thread makes me laugh

Old scabby MK4 Escort cabrios are worshipped on here but proper cars like XK8's and Porsches aren't

No wonder old Fords are the chavvy joke cars of the tuning scene...bits of rust dropping off them as you drive...oil leaks everywhere...AA membership...crap interiors...crap paintwork...that worried realisation that you simply cannot rely on the car outside your front door to fulfill its primary function (to transport you to where you are going without breaking down on the way )
At least have a bit of respect for other motors You know, the ones 75% of the people on this site could only buy by taking finance or dreaming

Its always the same losers on here saying "I would buy this 100K car instead of that one" etc etc....as they sit in their scummy little bedsit scratching around for anough money to buy a few tins of lager whilst they sit on the net abusing other car owners because they are jealous of their lifestyle - people who get where they are by HARD WORK and they buy themselves nice toys
Thank god Internet forums represent only a TINY minority of the population.

Ask 98% of the population if they would rather have an old fiesta/escort/sierra scraping it's MOT every year or something decent like a Porsche/Jag, they would think you are stupid for even asking the question

In the real world off the net and away from those really exciting shows where you go and look at one shiny car after another year after year, you tell ME who is the real saddos in life

XK8 or XKR would definatley be the best choice

but they do have their faults i know because

i work on them every day but definatle better

than a boxter and much easier to get parts

if you need them
