Boxster. Had one, awesome car. incredible handling and noise. Great fun and cheap to run!
Agree 100% with Porkie about them, most people who slag them have NO idea what they are capable of.

Hi m8
I am looking to replace my BM 7 series with an XKR next year, so I would definately side with the XK8 over the Boxter. The boxter is a good car blah blah blah, but everybody will hate her/ you, and it will get scratched.
With the Jag, people will let you out at junctions!!!
Just to build on this, I did some homework. Before you rush out and buy, some of the Jags suffered from 'the Nikosil' problem. BAsically, shitty grade fuel more common in the Northern part of the country could react with the Nikosil Liners of the bores. This led to loss of compression/ poor idling etc etc.
the only way to be sure is to either avoid the affected years (I am told anything pre-2000 is potentially a problem for the Jags, though not necessarily in all cases).
If you find the perfect car, to be sure, take it to Jag, and have them perform a leak-down test before purchase. This will reassure you.
Just to be clear, this is NOT just a Jag problem. This same problem cost BMW an awful lot of money on almost their entire range!

When you are doing that kind of mileage, expensive parts can be an absolute bitch!
that said, it sacks me off that my 7 costs as much to service as an M5!

And no offence taken of course. I love my Boxster... its a lovely lovely car. The best I have ever owned. I would rather keep that than any of my other cars! People may think I am a mad but I am the one who owns and drives it and doesn't just look at 0-60 times and judge a car because a certain section of its owners are cocks
But STILL the Jag is the better car for Imas wife I reckon

This thread is CLEARLY about second hand Boxsters and they are available from Ł14k onwards.
I am not arguing either. Just stating FACTS and my opinions.

You're entitled to your opinion, but I don't get the whole "I don't rate them" thing.
The mechanical cornering grip that a car generates is not a subjective issue. Also consider when racing drivers, eminent motoring journalists, and technical engineers rate a car highly, that kind of praise is not to be sniffed at. So pretty much everyone rates them who has a more valid and less biased outlook.. except you.
Of course it couldn't possibly be that you're just used to driving shit cars could it?
I also don't get how they are "over-rated". Compared to what? In what context? 993 on provide some of the most fantastic driving experiences (cheap now too ) ......... and I'm not even a Porsche fan! I just appreciate a good car when I see/drive one!

Where does all this "can't afford a 911" crap come from??
911's don't come as a mid engined 2 seater convertible, a Boxster does. And i've read a LOT of very well informed reports that a Boxster WILL AND DOES out perform a 911 in the handling department! Give a Boxster the same power and the 911 would be redundant, thats why you can't buy a 3.6 Boxster.
Miss mine terribly, but the FRS will do for now. May get another in a couple of years, never enjoyed driving a car as much as the Boxster. If you haven't owned/driven one long term I don't hink you have any idea.

This "poor man's 911" thing really irritates me.
It's just another Clarksonism that people who haven't driven a Boxster, or have so little appreciation of what actually constitutes a great handling car/great chassis, spout in order to appear mildly controversial.
Also shows a real lack of knowledge about cars in general.
For a start, the Boxster is mid-engined where the 911 is not. It's a pretty big fuckin difference that changes the whole characteristic of a vehicle.
Second, so what if it's cheaper than a 911. Are Porsche not allowed to introduce models into their range that are priced lower than a basic 911? Forgive me if I'm being obtuse, but I always though POrsche were in the business of making money, and from my last look out on the roads, they seem to have sold quite a lot of Boxsters. Maybe we should all write to comlpain that they're earning too much money at the expense of 911 brand image and customer financial perception.
Thirdly, so what? I would love to own a Boxster this time next year, and hopefully I will. If someone stops me and says "Ooh, I see you bought a Boxster because you couldn't afford a 911", my answer will be, "Yes. That's EXACTLY why I bought one you cretin. I actually can't afford a 911, but Porsche currently make a superb car that I can afford - should I deny myself one, and buy a Mk3 Toyota MR2 instead so that it doesn't interfere with your misguided perception of vehicle ownership?"
............. aaaaaaaaah, that's better

Legend
Poor mans 911 what a load of horse shit
I've been lucky enough to drive a few different Porsches over the years, one of which was the Boxster S and that was superb
Getting back to the point in hand, Bosch Man said in a previous thread that his misses wanted a car to pose in [nothing wrong with that] and as I said before, unless she wants to pose as some older blokes Au Pair or Bit on the side, she should steer clear of a Jag
C'mon guys, yeah they drive alright and IMO do look nice, I was even quite pleased when the old man decided to smoke one for a bit, but you talk about poor mans porsches, on the same lines the Jag is a poor mans Aston
The XKR thing is totally different though, never had a go in one but got blown completely away by one in the Skybus

I would defo have the boxter, anyone who knows, knows that they are an unbeleivebly good car to own and drive. You can get a decent 996 C2 for 25k, i'd be tempted by that too

I worked for Jag back in 99 and drove numerous XKR's, XK8's, XJ's etc. I also used to cycle with the mechanics so would spend my breaks talking to them which usually got onto Jag mechanicals. They didnt rate any of the XK's for reliability and longetivity of essential components. Gearbox is something I remember but I dont remember what it was about it.
They also mentioned costs such as 4 tyres costing over 1K including fitting.
I have always been a Porsche fan and even though the Jags are quick, they didnt cut it for me. Go the Porsche IMO.

I don't like boxster's because they dont have a roof. There's a different argument for you. As a general rule I believe that convertibles look daft as having no roof ruins the lines of the car. The boxster would of been AMAZING to me if it had been designed with a roof. But alas I think it looks like a bit of a hairdressers car. BUT I can appreciate how good theyre supposed to be but, then again an MX5 is supposed to be one of the most well balanced cars available, I still wouldnt buy one though as i'd look like a spud in it.
