as above thought harnesses have started to are seats the same?

How long do you get before they can no longer be used in competition?

5 years from DOM for harnesses.

Time span on seats at the moment is only for FiA sanctioned events

What car have you got ?

For sprints and hillclimbs if its a road car you dont even need bucket seats if its running in non modified class.

We never advise buying 2nd hand seats unless you know where they have come from and are 100% sure of their authenticity. Unseen damage is one concern yes.

Bucket seats won't be lifed for UK sprint motorsport for a while yet, unless you progress up the ranks to a high level.

Tony,

My harnesses are out of date, they ran out end of 2005. I bought them second hand but ‘as new’ and never used. So they have only had about 3000 miles of use by me, personally I can’t see the out-of date mattering really for my intended use [fast-road and track day]. What do you think?

evaluate their condition...

are they faded? ripped? nicked? going fluffy?

If not then for trackdays they will be fine.

Remember that car seat belts in a D-reg car are 20 years old and not many people worry about them!!!

Alex,

In as new condition! Which is why I haven’t really worried, just been in the back of my mind. I did think about the fact standard belts have no use-by date.

If you want to be 100% happy about condition, it may be worth contacting the manufacturer - Willans for example will check for you to confirm if they have been pre-stretched etc , I have sent harnesses to them that have been "used" if you like to check that they have not suffered stretch and confirm if they were OK to continue using.
It's very difficult to the untrained eye to tell if they have been stretched (ie been in a heavy shunt, and hence should not be used further), they will still look in good condition. This is the reason why it's important to know where they came from if not brand new.

Any belts used for any MSA sanctioned events... sprints, race, rally etc will be checked for date compliance.

THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO TRACK DAYS (or fast road cars) (YET !)

All belts supplied will have tags on them to show the expiry date for COMPETITION use. Its up to the individual if he/she would want to use them for anything else.

anyone needing harness's click on my ebay link, you wont buy them cheaper anywhere else.

as for seats being date for competition use,not trackdays, then it will be with us a lot sooner than you think tony, perhaps even january 2007 if the msa gets its way.
