In my experience of the workplace the only way to confront bullies like this is to confront them.
This might not sound like the easiest advice but it is the only one that works.
If you give a bully any room for maneuvre they will do it again and again and try to run roughshod over you every time.
Even if it means a blazing row, trying to go about things the 'nice' way very rarely works with these people.

Why dont you ask HR for "advice" before you make a formal complaint. That way they will see your acting on adult level rather than acting like a kid! If they advise you the best course of action is to make a complaint tell them you will think about it! You feel uncomfy working with him now, so having a formal complaint against him isnt going to be much different!

Just been in to see my manager and supervisor, thay have asked me to think about making a complaint.
