you will need a mk4 boss, the mk3 boss off the 16i will not fit, and you will also need to change the centre to a horn push, instead of the solid RS rubber, as the mk3 has the horn on the indicator stalk and the mk4 has it in the middle of the wheel

IIRC the MK 1 and 2 steering columns have splines where the Mk 3and 4 have a hexagon...

So that means the RS1600 steering wheel won't fit.....

Like I said, I thought the Mk 1 and 2 Escorts where splined and not hexagon but I might be wrong.

Why do you want to put an RS1600 wheel on a Mk4 anyway? Totally wrong for the era of the car really...

The only pictures I could find are here....

Are you really on about the RS1600 or do you mean the RS1600i?

I did wonder why you wanted to fit an RS1600 wheel to a much later car! That's why I commented on the Mk 1 and 2 bosses.

I have seen an RST S1 wheel on a Mk 4 before so I think the Mk wheel will fit on the Mk 4, the problem is, you won't have a horn push unless you get the Mk 4 boss....
