Default are HT supposed to not cross over each other?

are you suposed to keep HT leads away from each other? ie not have them overlapping etc?

if so, what problems can be caused by having em too close?

Actually, it is technically bad to overlap and if you must do so, they should overlap at right angles.....

However.. whatever your problem is Jim, im sure its not caused by tghis little known phenomenon
