Default GT4 / PS2 Problem

I jsut bought a PS2 with GT4. The PS2 was new although sold as 'open box' and the GT4 disc was used. During the game it will jsut hang sometimes or pause for ages then continue.
Driving the ring I get almost all the way round then it will jsut freeze.
My question is - would this be a disk problem or a PS2 problem. I dont have any other games to try out and narrow the problem down.

i would imagine the disk is to blame but to make sure go out and buy a demo disk or play a dvd and see how that goes mate.

Play a DVD - good idea, hadn't considered that.

I would imagine its a common issue though? Serves me right for not buying new from a shop if it turns out to be the disk.

Mines never hung on GT4. Have you tried cleaning the disk?

Cleaned the back of the disk twice. There are a few tiny scratches but other than that it looks ok

If you have a dvd lens cleaner try using that in the ps2. could be some dust on the lens.
