Default jag XK8/XKR tuning?

am thinking of getting a XK8 or XKR (preferably XKR) but wondered what the tuning possibilities are. i found this for the XKR:

http://www.tdi-plc.com/JaguarXKR.html

usual stuff like extra boost, exhaust, induction, bigger intercooler etc but prices are silly! is there no way i could just get someone like pro-alloy to make a decent intercooler and i just fit it myself? does anyone know anywhere cheaper for off the shelf bits.

and for the normally aspirated XK8 4.0 V8, what mods can be done apart from exhaust and filter? what would be the best chip for them etc.

and does any of the XK8's suffer from the Nikasil problem.

I cant see the point in buying the N/A one and spending a load of money on it only to stil lbe slower than the SC one.

I wouldnt really touch the SC one much performance wise unless i converted the gearbox to manual or something, they are quicker than the gearbox justifies as standard anyway.

yep good point

i found a place in USA selling the Arden uprated intercooler for about Ł800, still pricey and i'd need mapping on top of that and as you say the transmission might not be up to it

Its not just that the transmission isnt up to handling the power (although that is an issue) its also that its just SO slow to change gear when you nail it that if i was bothered about it being a really quick car in the real world i wouldnt want that transmission, its more suited to a genlte cruiers than a hard charger.

shame, cause other than that, they are awesome cars

am not a huge fan of nitrous, although i have got it on one of my cars at the moment! its a bit extreme to put on cars which are expensive to fix IMHO.

just been doing some reading up and the exhaust system is one of the main restrictions on the jag v8's, and the standard intercooler is a major restriction on the supercharged ones.

The supercharged version has a chargecooler... There is quite a simple pre- rad upgrade available for these...paramount perfrmance or racing green ltd. sell them.....

Phil, i have lots of real world experience of driving them (well mainly of a super V8 which is identical running gear but a slightly posher level of interior trim etc), thats what im commenting from, ive never seen a book on the XK8 gearbox have you? and if not then why would you think anyone was reading about them to comment?
And even if there was a book about them, as you say the times make it look like everything is working fine anyway, so anyone reading about them wouldnt know about the slow reactions im on about.

Its not the actual physical change itself when you are already under acceleation i found annoyingly slow, its the time taken to realise it needs to kick down when you are cruising in a high gear.

Are you disabled? surely you can downshift even a really average manual box like a T5 cossie one quicker than the XKR does? I certianly can!

with respect the super v8 is about a ton heavier so it would explain the crap change it also has different gear ratios so a comparison would be point less

anyway they are good cars with stunning looks
heres a pic of mine

Nice looking motor IMHO

Ive driven the XKR too, not just the super V8, ive just driven the SV8 more out of the too, and phils comments where about the XJR, which has the same ratios as the SV8 im 99% sure, the XKR ratios i cant comment on, but the action is the same, and i dont see how the weight would effect the time to change, and i certainly never noticed it.
Definately more pace in the XKR though, so the wieght difference certainly effects that

Anyway, its mainly a comment on auto boxes in general, i just wouldnt want any high performance car to be an auto, i like manual boxes.

No mate, didnt know it was a merc box, interesting stuff that.

I agree that the manual suits the car in standard trim, i found it a very quick way of getting round without any effort in the main, you can drive for hours and not notice you have moved, its like being in a sofa, lol, its just not what i would pick for a trackday toy or a car tuning project as i like the sensations of slamming through a manual box etc for that sort of thing.

Agree with you on that one Phil, thats why i stick to commenting on stuff like these Jags that i have personal experience of, stats and figures and graphs dont actually show you what a car drives like, only driving it does that
