If that's true, fair play to Mike!

Well just so that you can be told the whole truth and nothing but the truth .

Obviously responsibility for the incident has to rest squarely on my shoulders, as I was the following car. What happend was on a very fast part of the circuit through a normally 100+mph sweeping bend, I came up behind the Escort in question "quite" rapidly. He moved over to the far right of the track, which I mistakenly took for him letting me through (as I just "assumed" he had seen me coming up behind him), so I overtook him on the left side at a reduced speed of about 70-80mph. However, my assumption was completely wrong, and he was just setting up the car for this part of the track, and he had in fact not seen me move to the inside on to the normal cornering line (apparantly I have since learned that you "flick" these cars to set them up for a nice drift) and he then cut back in across the front of me. All I had time to do is lift (as braking at that speed with the car cornering that hard was a no-no), and as he came across the front of my car, he clipped the towing eye and it spun him off, denting the bottom rear corner of his car (quite badly) where the bumper normally sits. He was very good about it and I heard later that he was apparantly joking that at least I had found where there was some filler on his car that he wasn't previously aware of .

The top of the bumper mounting point on his car broke my washer jet and scuffed the paint. Where contact was made with my towing eye, it bent this slightly (although I'm not sure if it has done anything to the cross member until the bumper comes off, but fingers crossed).

Obviously I shouldn't have made the asuumption UNLESS I saw an indicator. Following that, I certainly waited for people to "let" me through properly (I even caught up with him later at the exact same point and he "sarcastically" indicated and let me through this time ). Shame some people don't know their left from right (hey Tony Turbo )?

I would have made exactly the same mistake on how to read his track positioning mike, well assuming i was in a car quick enough to actually be overtaking in the first place, which i wasnt

Well at least it's a first!

You actually hit a moving object this time around!

Can see quite easily how this could have happened though...... hope the damage isn't too bad.

Anyway, back to the piss taking.......

Before you had even started turning I could see you were going to spin, so had slown right down before hand. I just wasn't expecting you to come back forward onto the track, hence why I had to come to a complete stop to do a pithy little wave .

It was one of those not quite decisions...

I was slowing down and going for a cool down lap, but I saw you and a few other cars coming up behind me fast.... so I changed my mind and decided to try and not slow everyone down endlessly (it was the corner before you come onto the main stright).

BUT, I'd half started to move off line before I changed my mind... so I was now off line going for it

Moral of the story... make a decision and stick to it

Alex

Some would say that drifting round corners on a track day in busy traffic is a bad thing to do.

Enough people bitch about it on here when it happens at other track days.

I guess the incident highlights the need for people to follow the no over taking on bends rules at trackdays. As you never know what the guy in front of you will do due to their skill/driving style/car etc.

Mike Rainbird Hope the car's ok. Hopefully i'll get to have a look at your car one day soon as you're in my neck of the woods. Suprised i've never seen it about.

To be fair Mike the briefing confused this reguarding passing on left or right. They said in the briefing that it was the person overtaking responsibility to move off line to overtake slower traffic, which infact ment that you would be overtaking on the right side of the track some of the time if the slower car stays on line does it not ???? You must have attended a different briefing to me then, because he clearly stated that all overtaking must be done on the left (which is the usual track day rules WHERE-EVER you go ). He also said no overtaking on the bends. My excuse is that that is a fast curving "straight" .

Mike they said and i quote this "its the responsibility of the person with the faster car to move off line and overtake the slower car"

and thus im saying it could mean overtaking on the right if you are on certain parts of the track and the faster car responsible for moving offline as per briefing.

Andy,
He did say that, but he also said that you must only overtake on the LEFT . I didn't fancy trying out the grass to get past Tony .

He did say about over taking on the left BUT I felt it was a poor briefing considering not a lot of people put thier hands up for being on track before.

I am sure its the norm for people to move off the racing line and often indicate to that matter so the over taking and faster moving car know its safe to go past.

I think from this a few of the earlier sessions I went out in there were some hold ups from the novice drivers as people didn't move out of the way.

Later in the day I thought that had changed and most people were pulling out of the way and indicating.

Just my thoughts

In the briefing i attended he said something along these lines in my briefing (the one that started at 9am or so, second one i beleive)

"typically you will overtake on the left, as the line is predominately on the right with it being a counter clockwise circuit, but its ok to overtake on the left or right providing its safe to do so"

Thats shocking. On every track day I've attended (20+ albeit most as passenger) one of the main saftey points is to only overtake on the outside, and never round a bend.
