We've just bought the wife a Focus and eldest wants the wife's old Escort, but he's a student so he'll get/keep what I say.
My wife has owned her a 1998 R reg Escort 1.8 LX 5 dr from new. It has the 115 engine and aircon. Only done about 45k, and has had a new exhaust, alternator, starter, and timing belt in the last 12 months so there shouldn't be a lot more to change (I hope!)
Our eldest has a 2000 Saxo 1.0 First 3dr, bought a year ago from the original owner, my wife's aunt, and still with less than 20k on it.
Both cars are in excellent/mint condition, but the web valuation places suggest the Citroen is worth a bit more.
I figure that, being bigger, the Escort is probably a little safer and it is a Ford. However, it's also a good bit more powerful, more than twice as much to insure, and heavier on petrol, tax disc etc.
The Saxo is cheap as chips to run, easy to use in town and (so far) has been reliable. It's also really small and tinny, and you wouldn't want to go too far in it.
Help me decide guys - does he get the older larger car, or stay with the smaller younger one?

I was at a car auction last night and saw an escort sounding very similar to yours with similar mileage fetch 500 quid!
Imo the Saxo is worth around a grand more than the Ford.
