Hi,

can anyone tell me about the differences between the 4wd and the 2wd engine? Sump, distributor, thermostat housing, stronger block, and what else? Cylinder head...? And what about the management, what sort of modifications do we have to carry out to fit a stock 4wd engine into a '88 2wd cosworth? Thanks!!!

The engine mounts and sump, are you using the 4wd ecu and engine loom or the 2wd...

There are many differences between the 2 motors, but very few have an impact on an engine swap, depending on which components you wish to retain...

Do you still have the 2wd engine to swap parts off? Do you have the 4wd loom and ecu?

Thanks, everything is available from the blown 2wd engine, and there are also many parts for the new one, intake and exhaust manifold, turbo and stuff... only the 4wd loom and ECU are missing. Are they necessary for the swap?

Use the 2wd PF01 throttle position sensor with 2wd loom and brain (not the 4x4 PF09) - 4x4 loom and ECU not required.

throttle body is slightly differefnt, but both r interchangeable (have to use either full 2wd fuel rail and TB or full 4x4 one)

thermostat housing is different. need 2wd one.

sump is diff. use 2wd one. Also need 2wd oil pump and pickup pipe. 4x4 one is in a slightly different position.

Use 2wd TPS...both throttle bodies are the same tho.

oh, and to use the 4x4 oil modine u need to undo the big bolt (24mm i think) and move the filter up so u can bolt on the 2wd engine mount.

buy a sump gasket set for a 2wd and prep it for as best u can (take ur time and do it properly else it will piss oil)
The best tip is to turn the engine upside down while preparing the sump surface etc....

i done the same job not too long ago, and thats the main points.

Hi I just wonder...how much different are the oil pic up..?? I just got at 4wd engine in my 2wd and the Engine builder did not say anything about the oil pump and picup didnt fit ... and he used all 4wd parts with 2wd sump .... ????

Also what is "the 4x4 oil modine" ....???

I am running a 4WD engine with a 2WD sump. Didn't change the oil pump or pickup to the 2WD, just left on the original 4WD ones.

some people dont change the pickup pipe, its just in slightly a different position to the 2wd on (think its a bit higher up)

the oil modine is the big extension bit that the oil filter is bolted to on a 4x4 engine

seems to me mate is o just use the stronger block and in the process you can check all the tolerances for wear if you still have the both lots??

was there a eason for the change???

Hi!
The building process has been started and we ran into a small problem. The 4x4 sump had an oil pipe which the 2wd doesn't have, I don't know if it's necessary to put it straight to the sump as on the 4wd... can you help? Here's a picture to understand the problem, the pipe is marked with yellow.

Use the 2wd flame trap - or block off the extra 4x4 pipe - not required for 2wd sump.
