Tappets on a 2WD Saph.
Hello peeps
Iv just bought my 1st cossy and im pretty excited about owning the real machine at last. However in my haste to buy it i could have overlooked a few things that need changing now.
1 of these seems to be the Tappets. Does any 1 have a clue about the prices of Tappets for an '88 2WD Saph cossy. Im just trying to get a good idea of how much the job should cost ass i dont want my pants ripped off?
Any quotes from people who do this sort of work or from people who have had this sort of work done before would be much appreciated. Can you please also state where you got the tappets from and who did the work?
Thanks.

10.64£ per tappet from burton. not orginal but basicly the same.
changin tappets are easy job. takes about hour to do cylinderhead on place.
but it is always good thing to check the clearances when installing new tappets, so you know that the tappets hole isnt weared too much.

Testing the future
i wouldn't buy new, i would clean the ones that you have. that get noisy when they get clogged up inside with old oil and new oil cannot get in to close up the gap between valve head and cam.
take them all out and soak in degreaser. if you can put them somewhere warm (80 degrees is good), it's much better as the oil will get thinner and come out easier. what you're aiming for, is for the plunger in the centre to be easily moveable with your fingers. you'll find that on some that you remove, you won't be able to push it in as the little hole is blocked.
put the tappet in a vice or clamp, with a piece of ally tube on the plunger and slowly start to compress it. the old thick oil will be gradually forced out of the hole. do that a few times, and put back into soak. when in soak, push the plunger in and out to allow the degreaser to be sucked into the tappet (air bubbles will come out). do this as much as necessary until all tappets have free plungers that go in and out easily against the spring.
when you put them back in, they'll be lovely and quiet. if it is tappet noise that you have, and not little end bearings

Cheers for the info gents, but a question remains in my head.......... would it be a good idea or a bad idea to use non-Ford tappets? Or would it not make a huge difference either way?
I ask as the original Ford tappets are nearly £320, compared to the burton 1's which come in at £170. Does the half price tag mean they're not gona last as long or cant handle power upgrades or something???
Andy T - Them 1's on ebay mate....... are they alright for the Sapphire cosworth engine as they're listed for an Escort Cossy? Or are they all the same?
Cheers.

er......... if INAmade the iriginal Ford 1's then should they not be available from Ford?
Another Q.... some 1 is selling Tappets for a "Cosworth with the YB engine from 1986 onwards, 1998cc"! I take it as all the Cosworth engines were the YB design... or atleast the earlier 1's were?
