Default Sapphire Cosworth performance rear brakes

Looking for a performance upgrade for the rear brakes on my Sapphire Cosworth
There don’t seem to be slot of options or choice out there

What are people running on the rear
Ideally I’m looking at 4 pots with built in handbrake

really is overkill tim ,and im not sure you will find a 4 pot with a built in handbrake .they usually are fitted seperatley .

if your cossie is 2wd it will swap direction very quickly lol

Generally speaking Wilwood makes a 4 pot caliper with an integrated hand brake. Not sure about specific fitment for a Sapphire though.

If you have the 2wd solid disc then upgrading to the 4x4 vented disc setup is a very worthwhile upgrade imo.
I have done this on my 3dr. I think the only difficulty is getting a set of the wider 4x4 rear calipers.

Yep seen that but the calipers looks lost with the huge disc
But the discs do look good

No point what's so ever in getting 4pots for the rear of 2wd Saff imo.
It will only give you problems.

Cant think of any other benefits.

Sure ive seen a picture of a 2wd car on a trackday with its rear discs glowing. The 4x4 vented setup is the only way to imo.

I’ve a Reyland 300 kit on mine with 4x4 callipers. Only fitted it as the bigger disc looks better in the wheel

Yes, the discs are the same size, that being 273 MM.

Yep 4wd upgrade is best. I got some 4wd calipers and had them refurbished, bought new 4wd discs and pads and some 4wd rear disc guards/backing plates,job done.

On my 4x4 I also have the 325 mm kit from Reyland. I have that to get the brake balance close to original after fitting 356 mm discs with 4 pots at the front. 4 pots at the rear will probably upset the brake balance, but that depends on the size of the pistons.

When going from 2wd to 4wd rears and staying the with the standard disc size is there any real difference in brake performance?

Or is the vented discs just needed when going for a bigger diameter?

Is there enough braking force on the rear to actually warrant hanging from the standard 2wd setup?

I was told originally at the time fit 4x4 rear brakes so they don’t get as hot

IMO how much braking force you want on the rear should depend on how much you have at the front, in order to get a good brake balance.

Unless your on the brakes a lot especially being rears would it make that much difference?

Depends how the car is used really, on Ronnies Time Attacker on track the rears in std 2wd form, with good pads were fine at around 400-450bhp, but the moment we went over the 500-550bhp a set of rear pads would last ONE session out on track, we could literally put a set of pads in it, he would go out for 4-5 laps and come in with the pads white hot and no material left on them. the Std 4x4 Discs and callipers resolved the issue straight away, so they certainly work better in terms of cooling, but if anyone could possibly reach the limit on the road is another question.

Hi..is it still possible to get these rear disk guards....? As mine has never had some .. well since I got it in 95..?

Do you mean 2wd guards? If so then no Ford do not supply them anymore.Mine have been removed though.If you mean 4wd guards then Monster off here and on the escos site made a set for me.

Hi Paul.Well more air with the vented discs is gonna lead to keeping the brakes cooler again though dependant on how you drive and brake in the car I guess.
My complete braking on my car was horrific even after a good brake bleed with quality Dot 5.1 fluid and fitting new braided brake hoses.
Hence why I have gone mad and had the all new 4wd rear set up, all new refurbed calipers all round and all new performance discs,pads etc.Hopefully it will be far better than the old tired set up.Fingers crossed.

No good for a Sierra they are more for kit cars.
we have used them on cars at work but the handbrake is just a parking brake.

Good advice.
I run 4x4 vented rears on mine.
Trick is good quality discs and pads and calipers which are in good working condition.
Reyland do a big disc conversion which uses std vented calipers so that would be the next step up.

I have standard 2wd rears on mine with grooved discs, but I also have 4wd calipers off my old saff so am contemplating which to use, I will go uprated pads in whichever I choose anyways.
I’m thinking staying 2wd as 1) I already have grooved/decent discs and 2) they weigh less, I know that sounds a little gay but my car will be going on a diet once going back together.
I also don’t think I’ll ever cook them as I won’t be doing any track days or super hard braking use (and it is the rear, the fronts are going bigger)
