Engine spec
OK you folks seem pretty switched on regarding what the current thinking is regarding the Cosworth YB so I have a question. Which would you consider to be the best ignition system, wasted spark or COP's? I have a standard compression 2wd engine, 4x4 head and T34.48 turbo. Was looking to make low 300's in terms of hp but was really looking for a responsive motor with good manners and a knockout bottom end/mid range. From what has been said it looks like my numbers are conservative? I will be using an OMEX 710 with lambda and possibly knock sensing. Any comments / advice appreciated.
Cheers,
Phil.

I need to ask why omex when you are not chasing power figures.
The Weber L8 ecu will be very capable of doing you spec.
Is you 2wd bottom end std? If so fitting a std unskimmed 4x4 head will increase compression.
if you are after a punchy engine in the low 300 I would just use a T34.48 using 55lb Siemens and for even more Torque why not use a 34mm restrictor in the turbo as per rally cars.
Don't get me wrong the omex 710 is a good edu and I have used them at work on projects.
Coil on plug is the ultimate but a cossie with just a cool pack is a great upgrade.
Pick a tuner and go with there recomndations.
MSD is my choice but it's you car your money.

Totally agree with coil on plug...makes it reliable to today’s standards (although after owning a Vw I carry a spare coil pack)

The OMEX seemed a better option - greater flexibility, able to access / monitor / diagnose faults on lappy etc. My main concern was to build a reasonably powerful engine with good reliability. The OMEX also came at a good price.
The engine is standard 2wd (inc head) but I have a spare 4x4 head that I was going to use (again for reliability). Many years ago I re-built a 2wd motor, 205 block re-sleeved back to standard with a 4x4 head. I ran it for a couple of years - it then found it's way into a mk2 escort. That car was thrashed to within an inch of it's life every day - never an issue. In fact the car gave up before the engine (chassis twisted).
I also quite like the idea of COP's - from a functional standpoint they have to be superior. I have however seen one or two comments regarding heat build up due to their location reducing life / causing failures (generally, not just on YB). At least on the YB there are no engine covers to hold in the heat (as per skylines). Has anyone had any experience of COP's on a YB?

Fair comment.
Caddy has coil on plug and I run a coilpack so both opinions will help you decide.
like I said I use omex 710 ecu on V6 Lancia engines and it works well but that's in N.A. form on throttle bodies.
My advice is don't over spec your engine a std engine will do 470 bhp with aftermarket management and a borg turbo.
caddyshack will explain more.

I haven’t heard of any coil pack failures on a yb, like I say I do carry a spare in the car as a precaution. Yes, my engine in standard form mapped at 469bhp on standard Engine, 200 block with decent metal head gasket. 7064. It would have done more but the old intercooler was not up to it, I have a big spec r now.
I am now going 2.2 stroker which mapped at 710bhp but I am down tuning and will run either 530bhp with my 7064 or 630 with the next efr up.
