The unit was broke into on the weekend and some things were taken he thinks I did it so he has told me he has taken my car till I pay 5k

Involve the police fully, go in person to the police station with a recording of a voice call stating exactly what he wants, provide evidence to the contrary on being able to steal or be involved in a robbery etc and plead your case to them.

If you're really worried about not getting it back if you get the plod involved, then just pay the guy the Ł5k, film it, then have him arrested for extortion, theft, and blackmail. Then sue him for falsely claiming you were involved in the break in.
