Default 4x4 T3 turbo removal

Broke the inner banjo bolt on the cooling pipe to the turbo and I am unable to get the right sized "easyout" in between it and the head so it looks like I will have to remove the turbo to remove this broken bolt. (unless I can get a short fat easyout) It looks to be a difficult job to get to the inner two nuts holding the turbo to the exhaust manifold. Searching on here I see mention of removing the intake "snail" to make it easier to get to. What is involved in removing this. It also looks like there is another pipe connection to the bottom of the turbo (opposite the oil feed on top) with two bolts that also look near impossible to get to. Any advise greatly received. This job (cleaning out water pipes) is just going from bad to worse. Thanks David

As you have said I remove the compressor housing( inlet snail)
2 10mm bolts then hold the oil drain on, you can then get to the rear nuts

Thanks steve. Does this come off without having to remove the turbine wheel or anything. I am a bit worried about removing any of the spinning parts incase I affect the balance or something. David

Morning David!

How bad is the banjo?

I never took the snail off mine i just took the turbo off, i had to cut down a spanner and lever it off the manifold to turn it.

I would say to remove the snail you just undo the bolts going round the turbo but not 100% as like i said ive not done this.

As for the pipe under the turbo i believe i used a socket on extensions.

These little jobs always take a turn for the worse lol.

Hope this helps.

Hi Eigdoog
Head broke right off the banjo leaving the rest of the bolt in the hole. Turns out I did at least need to try and get these off as totally blocked with scale and rusty crap. Makes me worried what the inside of the engine waterways look like. David

Must of been rusty and used right up to break right off

By the sounds of it you are going to give it a good clean though so you should get anything that is in the system.

Hope you get there anyway!

yes you can undo the snail and it doesn't affect any balancing , the wheel is attached to the shaft an is untouched,
