Default Alternator belts too short all of a sudden DOH!

Hi guys,
Feeling a bit of a wally this evening...
Spent all afternoon bolting all of the ancillaries on to the new engine for my 3door...

But.. Used the same drop bracket which had no issues on my old 205 engine but on this engine it seems to make the alternator belts too short! I'm sure I'm missing something obvious but I just couldn't see it! Any ideas? See in the pics there is no way the hole in the alternator will line up with the slot in the tensioner...

Any ideas guys? Gonna lose sleep over it

You mean the tensioner bracket? Move it up to the water pump bolt to the right of it? Although it would then fit I'd know that it's still not the correct way if you get what I mean...

Or do you mean the drop bracket?

Could it be that the new belts haven't got as much slack in them? I offered the old ones up quickly and they looked the same size at a glance.

Cheers, Luke.

I'm pretty sure that you have to use a different adjusting bracket if you use the drop bracket .

I am guessing you did not have that turbo before?

If so I think what it is is due to the larger turbo, you need to do a "drop bracket mod" (there is a guide on here), this is what they did with the RS 500, as the alternator sits lower due to the turbo.

Thats the drop bracket mate.. Its needed with this turbo as was fine on my last engine hence my confusion.

Interesting, how come it all worked ok on the last engine then? Or is it just you need a different adjusting bracket on a 200block?

Thanks mate, same turbo as before, same alternator, same drop bracket (already fitted in the pics) lug has been cut off of the block as on the old engine... The only differences are the block and the belts although the belts appeared to be the same length as the old ones!

Its dave pritchard built long studded 200 block,8.2:1 comp JE pistons,26/25mm ported head, T4, BD16 & 15 cams with double valve springs, spec-r winged/gated/baffled sump (you can just see a 'wing' in the second pic down) it'll be running on syvecs management.

I had this same problem.....bere with me!

I ordered up some Motorcraft belts from Ford and they came too small (like in your pic).

Because it was mail order I was stuck and needed it fixed asap, so I went up to Halfords and got another off the shelf (listed for Cosworth) and sized it up with the Ford one.....it was exactly the same!

It was as if they were all listed wrong...

So I took it to a local motorfactor and sized it up by eye and managed to get a temporary one from another application to work.

I went back to my local ford dealer who went through a big box and I picked 3 Motorcraft ones up that fit perfect BUT they are not listed for a Cosworth.....

hope this helps!

That is helpful mike thanks!
When I go back to where the car is at the weekend ill offer the new belts up properly to the old ones and see what the score is.. Think the new belts are gates items, I didn't think they looked any different but I only glanced at the lengths.

Did you get it sorted in the end mate?
Here's a photo of mine with the 937a fitted you can just see the model number of the belt by the alternator pulley.

Thanks mate.. Perfect fit!!
Was going to spend some time on it all this weekend but we all got some bloody horrendous stomach bug. Nothing worse than having to clean up a toddler's sick when you are feeling fragile yourself
Oh well, there's always next weekend!
