You only need two wires, the main battery feed, and the warning light wire for battery on dash, this is blue.
If the 1.6 engine had a electric choke ?, the extra wire would be for this, it is normally a 8Volt output fed from a single winding of the alternator.

cheers Tabetha,
i have been knocking my head up against a wall about this wiring, there is an electric choke and that clears that up.
dont suppose you'd know where that blue for the battery light joins up to the loom or could i tap in behind the dash clocks??
thanks in advance.

The blue wire for the dash light normally goes into the loom around the area just above the crossmember that side on the ledge where the main loom runs on top of the chassis section bit.
But yes it can be joined directly in if you wish.
