Default Temp Sensor

Just a quickie,

My temperature gauge on my 3dr wasnt registering anything as the engine got hot. Took the wiring off the sensor in the head tonight, earthed the wire against the earth terminal of the battery and the gauge rose up in to the red, so i'm happy the wiring is right.

Took the little sensor thingy out the head, and with the wire attached droped the sensor bit of it into a cup of boiling water to see if that made a difference, but got nothing at all, (i had ignition on, just incase anyone asks)

I'm just checking that this is a valid test, the sesor doesnt need to be in the block to work does it (doesnt earth off it or something) Should it rise when dipped in the cup of red hot water?

If so i can just go and get a new sensor job done.

would have thought it has to be earthed out too work as it works on resisistance to earth . if that makes sence.

Hi mate, you ok
Yeah was wondering if it needed to earth off the block, i did try a crude wire running from it to the block while i had it in the cup, but dont know how effective that was, still got nothing. Just been looking at new sensors, they cost £13, just for that tiny little sensor!

good news is its one of the last jobs left before i get the MOT booked!

You still having national day pal (now its the 13th)

Defo need to be earthed, as it's the variable earth(resistance to it) that the gauge measures.

and these things do fail by eventually hardly registering anything at all - so my guess is the sensor

So i suppoe my test could be to heat the end of the sensor up in a cup of boiling water and then quickly get it back in the block (thus earthing it) and see if it registers anything at all.

You've already established the gauge works, so either you have a shit heater ?(with stuck open stat) or duff sender, not even worth testing imo.

Already checked stat and its spot on, was just double checking sender cause if it was a quick test it could have saved me £13, but i've ordered a new one now so am hoping the problem will be solved soon.
