If it's just rattling try a set of cams and a set of tappets - cams are about £150 each for any BD 8,10, 12, 14 AND ON.... and Matt lewis will do a set of OE followers for £80
Check all the cam carrier studs are still tight in the head as i have just had to helicoil 2
If you go for a rebuilt head your looking at £30 each for a valve and £7 each for a guide going by burton prices - then a head gasket set is going to cost between £120 - £250
So roughtly costing £1110 if you go for the complete thing

20K+ Super Poster.
If the head has any amount of miles, it will have shagged guides, as well as a few valves too.
Just as example mine needed 16 new guides, and 8 new exhaust valves, not bent or leaking, but thinner edges than I would accept, so binned them.
All in with complete overhaul plus 8 VAUXHALL exhaust valves machined to fit it came out at about £500.
Added a group a gasket, few cometic gaskets from Matt L(01543 484488) all was well.
Cossies suffer terribly from guide wear.
I would be tempted to clean out the tappets first, as they are easily cleaned, often just gunge/crap stopping the ball on the seat holding pressure.
