The crap joke of a rear suspension set up is to remind you you are in a cossie and not a decent engineered jap car!!

At least there are options available to improve it - uprated diff mount, uprated beam mounts and the camber/toe adjustable beams - which is the main thing.

One thing that makes me smile somewhat is that despite all the slating the old Sierra gets, if you read all the original mag tests when the Sapphire came out, it ALWAYS used to beat the similar powered E30 M3 ( 200bhp and similar weight and similar size tyres ) on a track. Even the guys that preferred the M3 to drive, like Gavin Green from Car, admitted the Sapphire was a faster car in lap times. Not a bad achievement considering the rear suspension and how the E30 M3 gets praised for its sublime handling

Anyway, anyone know if the GGR axle tightening kit is still available? Can't see it on the website unless it is the rear beam fast road kit?

"URETHANE SUSPENSION BUSHES
GGR 088 Outer Track Control Arm Bushes
GGR 089 Inner Track Control Arm Bushes
GGR 090 Anti-Roll Bar Mounting Bushes
GGR 184 Rear beam bushes each
GGR 792 Escort rear anti-roll bar
GGR 902 Sapphire 16mm rear anti-roll bar
GGR 903 Sapphire 4x4 18mm rear anti-roll bar
GGR 831 4x4 gearchange cradle bushes
GGR 068 Rear beam fast road kit
"

As you say there are bits to improve it, but that's the point they did a half decent rush job on the engine then stopped when they got to anything else, it could have been so much better to start with than it was, hence the need for improvement.
Imagine if it had decent stuff to start with!!
I'm 99% sure they do call it rear beam fast road kit at GGR.

I guess Ford left us enthusiasts with something to do at weekends!

Actually I'e been a bit rubbish re the beam kit and if I'd looked a bit harder on the GGR website I would've seen this in the Frequently Asked Questions bit

"
What is the purpose of the rear beam mounting kit?

This kit actually fits around the outer two rear suspension mountings. As described above, the rear suspension is connected to the car only in three places, and when the outer bushes become worn, the suspension will pivot around the centre, and give a steering effect from the rear. The two parts of the rear beam mounting kit actually reduce the free movement of the bush, and therefore prevent the rear wheel steering effect.

How does the rear beam mounting kit fit?

To fit this kit the rear subframe must be lowered away from the underside of the vehicle. It is recommended that this is done one side at a time. There are two parts to the kit, a smaller cone shaped piece, and a larger dish shaped item. The cone shaped part fits into the top of the mounting bush, (above the subframe), with the tapered side facing down into the bush. The larger dish shaped part fits directly below the subframe, with the shaped surface pushing into the rubber part of the rear beam-mounting bush.

Why is the rear beam mounting kit only recommended for two wheel drive cars?

The rear wheel steering effect is most noticeable on two wheel drive cars, when accelerating hard, the car will steer one way, (usually to the right) and then on deceleration, the car steers in the opposite direction. The rear beam mounting bushes are also more prone to wear on two wheel drive cars due to the loading put on them during acceleration. If the rear beam mounting bushes are worn excessively, to the point of collapse, the rear suspension will run directly onto the harder mounting kit and transmit high levels of road noise at all times. If this is the case, then we would recommend the fitment of replacement urethane rear beam bushes.

Why do GGR not usually recommend urethane rear beam mounting bushes?

The rear suspension arms are fitted with metal flexible joints, and so, road noise is passed directly into the rear subframe. If soft subframe mounting bushes are not used, this noise will be transmitted into the bodyshell of the car. The use of urethane rear beam mountings does bring a noticeable improvement to the handling of the car, but the increase in road noise must be tolerated.

"

I presume you can still buy the standard bushes from Ford or GGR to go with this?

The ones made by mc2racing in the us sell for around Ł130 from Mike R.
Someone was supposed to by now be producing these built in uk as well, but I've given up with them now.
The poly is so hard on these that would be interesting to see the difference between these and totally solid.
They make one hell of a difference though, even without arb they stop most of the roll, I found, and stop all rear wheel steering on bumps, corners.

Where did you get the solid mounts from Nash?

It seems there's basically 4 choices

1/ Standard mounts
2/ Standard with GGR axle tightening kit
3/ Poly bushes
4/ Solid mounts
