Alternator Possibly On It's Last legs
I was pulling up to my car park spot and got a big wiff of an electric burning smell, plus what sounded like a supercharger whine every time i revved the engine slightly. I quickly check the battery voltage and it sunk to 11.5 volts, that was with everything off bar the engine obviously. i lifted the bonnet and a little ploom of smoke came out. the revs suddenly went up a little and checked the voltage again and it was back to its usual 13.5, and the smell had gone.
Any ideas?, and how much are cossie alternators these days.?
cheeRS guys.

I would be looking for a shorting wire, doesn't sound like alt is on way out, but overloaded due to short possibly, they will "sing" when worked really hard.
A new alt should be around £45 or so, best get yours rebuilt if necessary, most of them only need brushes, but some do bearings as well, which can be tricky to get out sometimes, go to a COMMERCIAL electrical place ie one that does trucks etc all the time as you will get better prices, but have a good shop around as well.

I would have a look at any cables under the bonnet, amke sure they have not chaffed through on anything, it might not be a short but I would look just in case.
