4x4 front diff
got an oil leak i think from where the front diff goes into the sump what sort of a job is it ?? do you have to drop the rack and cross member?? is this common on the 4x4??
many thanks Ian

where the diff goes into the sump, there is a big o-ring that slots around the diff to stop this from happening
it's going to be engine oil that's leaking
unfortunatly, the diff doesn't come out past the crossmember as there isn't enough space for it, so crossmember out, or at least dropped, is the order of teh day
i'm sure someoens said that theyv'e done it without dropping it, but whenever i've tried to remove them, they've never had enough clearance
on the plus side, the o-ring is about 50p but when mine went, it took 6 hours of labour to get it fixed

this shows you the problem you are up against, not enough space
and you can see the groove for the seal to go into, admitedly this is much bigger than thenormal one as it's a quiafe thing

if its the o ring around the diff thats leaking , it wont be engine oil...
the diff can be removed completly and you dont loose any engine oil as the sump is a sealed unit,
the diff only seals against the sump to prevent the diff oil escaping
and the front diff comes out in about 20mins... no need to drop the crossmember.
if you undo the os rack mount and budge the rack forward it clears easily. and leave the top bolt in the diff, as it doesnt come out of its hole in place..just slacken it right off untill its out of its thread, and make sure when you replace the diff the bolt is back in its hole! and remember you need to strip the ns down and remove the shaft that runs through the sump in a sealed tube.
