Default Approximate BHP gain from Intercooler

Hi,

Just wondering the power gain of a RS500 intercooler over standard 2WD cooler as car has had one in previous life but now has standard intercooler back on it (guessing it's in region of 20BHP) not on standard car of course. Also will use this thread to see if the names Phillip Barker or Syd Shepard ring any bells as they are previous owners of the car?

Kind regards,

Martin.

Unless the 2wd was causing high temps I can't see thre RS500 one making that much difference of 20bhp.

mine went from 297bhp on a standard 4x4 cooler to 327bhp on a pro alloy RS500 cooler, on back to back runs on the rollers at Reyland, I am not convinced it would make that much differance out on the road though

yea they did a test in one of the mags on front mounts recently.

The pro alloy had the best gains with around 30bhp (consistent with above), dont think it gave the biggest drop in cooling however.

I think the lowest gain was around 15bhp..cant remember exactly.

Was it done in a proper air temp controlled cell ?, the only way I could see that much would be if the 4wd was way undersize for power and spec, but that would not to me appear to be the case.

in my opinion stg3 or over should have an rs500 cooler standard cooler would struggle to keep the inlet temps down

330bhp upwards and it'd be the 1sr addition i would recomend to anybody
you mostly get what you pay for
but as proved in the fast ford test the airtec intercooler is excellent value for money
thats whats fitted to my own car and it comes highly recomended by me(as long as your not going for a lightweight car)

My mate bought on of those Ebay special's for about £160 and it was crap pain in the arse to fit and the car was down on power compared to the standard 4x4 cooler.

Was the comparison/tests done against a new OE intercooler though?

Hi Neil

I think in the comparison tests they did (with Twellsie's Sapphire as the test mule) that they did attempt to test a genuine Ford RS500 intercooler. However, IIRC, it got mashed in the post so they couldn't run it against the others.
They've done this test in the past though and I'm sure the genuine Ford ones come out very favourably compared to even the best aftermarket ones ( from a performance point of view )
