Hi all,I am going to change my water pump but the problem is whats the difference between a 2wd one and 4x4.Does the 4b one have more outlets or are they in a different place. My car is 2wd but it does have a 200 block this is why I ask. Many thanks for any advice given.

4wd one is deeper in the vane dept, and flows somewhere around twice the water flow of the std 2wd one.

If you want to use a 4x4 water pump, you must also use a 4x4 thermostat housing.

If you've got a 2wd thermostat housing, use a 2wd pump.

as above the thermostat housings and water pipes are differant also
if the thermostat housing has 1 pipe coming out of it then its a 2wd pump
if its got 2 pipes coming out of it then you've got a 4wd pump
as well just replacing with the same type as whats already on it so save swapping more stuff over

Best way to ID these parts?

I know the pumps are round for 2wd and the 4wd pumps are X shaped.

On a 4x4 i take it you have to take the timing belt off to do the water pump.....

i see motorcraft water pumps on ebay for 65 - 69gbp. they state motorcraft, but if the pump from pinto engine fits cosworth engine, the items on ebay can be simple pinto pumps? how to recognize them? Thanks

Default Water pumps

My 3 door which has just undergone a major engine rebuild, had a granada/ cortina pump fitted. This could have been one of the many factors that contributed to the damage that the engine suffered. It now has the correct 3 door pump fitted. The fact that pumps from other fords fit, and look similar doesnt mean that they do the same job as the correct item.

According to "Blue Cossie" Cosworth 2WD water pumps are same as Pinto?

Kind regards,

Martin.

Aftermarket pumps have a open vane type rotor(pressed steel) where the genuine ford one has a closed cast one which flows more
