If its a 2wd saph then the box could be behind the passenger foot well kick panel like mine. Changed mine this week but hasnt switched the lights off, but this could be because the new one I have is buggered as well!

I have had problems with these they work on difference between resistaces so any bad joints or poor connections will signal a bulb failure. Also a wrong wattage bulb will show as a failure. Try resoldering all the joints in the ecu as that has worked for me. If you do swap the ecu then make sure you get the one fom the same car as i swapped one from a later car to a mk1 and it showed faults even though it worked in the original car. Like i said try all connections plugs and make sure the joints are free of corrosion and grease them up.
