saff cossie central locking
what causes the central locking to open and close constantly when trying to lock the car. Is it faulty central locking motors or the connectiors that cause the fault.

It can be stuck linkages as they do not operate top full position the motors which contains the lock/unlock switches view it as not in either so cycle between the two until it finally gets to one position.
I just clean up all the linkages take off door panels(front) and see exactly what is happening travel wise, often just a clean and grease up sorts them out.

Is it a pre or post 1990 model?
Early ones had the lock switch in the top of the handle, the later ones just pushed the handle in further.
It could be the rods sticking. Most likely though is that either the grease inside one of the motors is getting hard which is stopping the lock from finishing its cycle (a quick clean out and regrease should be suffice) or more likely it will be the looms where they go into the doors breaking down. MK4 Escorts used to do the same thing and the lock motors and wiring is identical.
The 2000e had the same issues and it was found that passenger rear door had latch issues, the front door had loom issues and once all that was fixed, the tailgate motor started to play up and would cause it to cycle randomly. Disconnecting the motor solved the problem.

got it sorted today. The little motor in the central knocking mechanism had been spinning that much the plastic gear on the end of the motor had been burnt and the motor was just spinning.my mate had a spare mk4 escort mechanism and we swapped bits round and now its working spot on. Thanks people for your suggestions.
